I've helped several people get qualified for disability payments over the years. Every single one of them has been 1) truly unable to work; 2) wanting to work; and 3) a total nightmare to get approved. For people without much of a work history or whose work has been under the table/part of the cash economy - the monthly payments aren't even subsistence level. It was under $800 a month, last I checked. The cheapest rooming houses in the area charge $750 for a roach-infested room.
I absolutely agree with this. SS makes everyone jump through hoops of fire, and from experience I absolutely expect them to turn down virtually every initial application. After our car accident and her rehab, my wife returned to work and continued to do so until her physical limitations forced a medical retirement. She's one of the few people I know of who got SSD almost immediately. That said, working in a family practice clinic I saw multiple cases of people who were either on the disability train or trying to get there. Disability fraud is a very real thing, and there's a helluva lot of folks out there who'd be happy to get that little check and sit on the couch and watch TV.
