The successful reporter on this beat will execute on lightning-fast stories and posts on the latest from the NFL, NBA, MLB, colleges and more across California, with an emphasis on happenings in Sacramento and the Bay Area. She or he will also have opportunities to cover the Sacramento Kings and the San Francisco 49ers, backing upbeat reporters when needed. However, the principal intent is that you drive a diversity of sports conversation online.

    Responsibilities

The Real-Time Reporter will be responsible for writing, compiling and/or producing stories and posts on what makes being a California sports fan so maddening, or so fun. From what the 49ers and Raiders did during the National Anthem to how Kings fans’ react to LeBron James’ first visit as a Los Angeles Laker, there is a great opportunity to tell stories. Reporting can humanize our on-field heroes or make us shake our heads in ways a true fan can appreciate (ie: different parking prices for A’s and Giants’ fans at the Coliseum).

This reporter will work for all five of McClatchy’s news organizations in California: The Sacramento Bee, The Fresno Bee, The Modesto Bee, The Merced Sun-Star and the San Luis Obispo Tribune. Her or his stories will appear across sites and platforms, ensuring this reporting is seen across the state. The position is based in Sacramento and reports to the Sacramento Bee Sports Editor.

    Requirements

The most compelling candidates will have:

    • The ability to write quickly, accurately and well
    • At least 1-2 years of sports reporting experience
    • Solid news judgment and excellent journalism ethics
    • An intuitive sense of what’s important and interesting
    • A good grasp of what drives interest on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms
    • A strong entrepreneurial spirit, deep curiosity and extremely high energy
    • A collaborative style that works comfortably across teams spread throughout the office and company
    • Quick study of CMSes and storytelling tools
    • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff and editor
    Education
    • College degree required.
    Personal Attributes

Energy, flexibility, and online smarts. The ability to monitor a vast amount of information for a wide audience, matched with discerning judgment about what to pursue. The ability to execute both quickly and well, with creativity.

McClatchy is looking for a great Real-Time Sports Reporter.
