Former college football and NFL writer for the Jackson Clarion-Ledger died today at 61 from cancer. He was most (in)famous for (not) asking Doug Williams "how long have you been a black quarterback?"

Butch could rub people the wrong way at times, but he was a great writer and a damn good reporter. He was at the Ledger during what I remember as a golden age for their sports staff in the mid-80s, which included the likes of Rick and Bobby Cleveland, Billy Watkins, Orley Hood, Rusty Hampton and many others.

RIP indeed to a fine newspaperman.

Butch was a colleague (in Jackson and in Louisville), a friend, a good reporter and a hell of a writer. Condolences to his wife Jana.
