Publisher of the Boston Phoenix dead at 74 after a long affliction with pancreatic cancer. My feelings are profoundly mixed. He could be the most miserable SOB to work for there ever was, and yet I'd never have had a career without him, and sometimes he was a great guy to work for. The Phoenix was an historic accomplishment in journalism, and without him, it doesn't happen. An honest biography of Steve would be a very good read. No Phoenix alum could ever write it. To my own surprise, I am desperately sad at this news.
