Oh no. I was his editor for a couple years when he covered senior golf for the PGA Tour, just a delightful man and an excellent scribe.

Eras don't pass with dates, but with people. You read stories like that excellent obit and realize it's about a time now passed - the relationships, the dedication to craft, the language ("it's a tap-in"), the commitment of a media outlet to tell stories from everywhere, sending and trusting their best people to do so. Sad and fitting, perhaps, in the context of his career, that the News stopped staffing golf tourneys outside the state when Vartan stepped down.
Would have enjoyed meeting the guy.

Spent a gazillion days with him, covering golf and playing our fair share together. Indeed, one of the good guys. I’d be hard-pressed to think of a city with three guys of the same era who wrote about golf as many years as Vartan, Jack Berry and Jack Saylor.

Jack Berry called the paper the Miracle on your Doorstep
Many nights, he was absolutely right
Vartan took over for Jack on both the Wings and golf beats
