My mom's 62. She says she's an old geezer. :-\ But I was more referring to the Chrysler New Yorker she was driving --- you can put a 20-year-old in a New Yorker and it's still a geezermobile.

And I'd have to see pictures of the surrounding area to try to figure out what she might have seen to figure out what she might have thought she saw. That doesn't change the fact that US-market bikes run with their headlights on by default. She should have seen him.

The only serious car accident I ever had was exactly that, and I was 21 at the time.

I was at a four-way stop in downtown Allentown, Pa., looked to my right and saw a car about a half-block away. I made a left turn, and that car was on top of me, caved in the right side of my Bobcat. I was charged.

    Oh, wow.

I hope 21 didn't get the points on her driving record. ;)

There are almost always cars in the turning lanes of major intersections. In this case, it appears that there may have been a line of cars in the turning lane next opposite the lady. If a car had moved into the intersection in anticipation of making a turn, it might have blocked her view of the right lane, where Ben was on his bike.

But I haven't read the details and don't think it matters much at this point.

Pittsburgh is well known for the "Pittsburgh left," which is:

A: If you're the first one in line in a turning lane and there is no left handed arrow, you gun it when the light turns green before the traffic on the other side gets going.

    and

B: If you're waiting as the first in line after the green arrow expires, you edge your way into the middle of the intersection. When the light changes you gun it before opposing traffic gets going. You kinda' have to since you're in the middle of an intersection.

If she pulled this move it wouldn't shock me. 90-percent of the city has done it. It's a driving tradition like slowing down for a tunnel...you know, just in case the car won't fit.
