Matador, that's not the "Pittsburgh left" -- it's the "Everywhere in America left."

First of all, obviously the most important thing is this man's health. Even if he brought it on himself to an extent, he's got a tough road ahead and a lot of pain in his future and I can sympathize with that.

One of my first reactions was to call my brother, who rides his motorcycle with no helmet, and tell him he is a moron. I hope somebody is telling Ben Roethlisberger the same thing. I don't see how any of the major injuries happen if he wears a full helmet. I wonder how long it will be before Roethlisberger can speak so he can remind us how important it was to be free to do what he wants.

Someone should explain to the guy that just because you have the world by the balls doesn't mean you have to squeeze. (Does that even make sense? Screw it.)

Pardon me, but this last part is pure fanboy. If his knees really are fine, then Roethlisberger's refusal to take the proper precautions apparently cost the Steelers their star quarterback for at least a portion of the 2006 season. I heard Mike and Mike on ESPN Radio talking about him possibly returning for the opener, but I think the radio reports in Pittsburgh talking October or November are more realistic. He definitely failed in his responsibility to his teammates, coaches and ownership, all of whom I am sure will stand by him anyway.

Busey 1994: "Helmets are for bikers who don't know how to ride a bike."
Busey 2006: "Put the helmet on, son."
    Hope Ben's listening.

You know in this day and age I just find the responsibility to teamates idea so old fashion. In the days of free agency I think that whole idea has gone out the window. I think a player has a responsibility to honor his contract with ownership and that's it.

Boom - I just noticed 9999. Almost there!

I'd say the circumstances regarding responsibility to teammates are different in this instance - the Steelers just won the Super Bowl and have a nucleus returning to defend that title, and then the star QB does something absolutely asinine and puts his life at risk.

The Steelers are unique in that they're an organization that values loyalty, and doesn't overtly air its dirty laundry (save for Kordell Stewart). The organization will keep any admonishing private, and I'm sure the hard core of the Steelers - Hines Ward, Alan Faneca, even Jerome Bettis despite retirement - will have a few words behind closed doors with Ben Roethlisberger.

I was betting on Cantonese. He could misspell something and none of us would be able to call him on it. :D

You think Roethlisberger would say that his O line has no responsibility to their teammates?

I find it amazing that all States haven't made helmets mandatory for motorcycle riders......drivers have to wear a seatbelt and had the same complaints like "its not comfortable, I'm a good driver and don't need it, etc"...I got used to wearing my seatbelt and now it doesn't feel right if I'm not wearing it. Many now states require children to wear helmets when riding a bicycle...but its not necessary when driving a machine that can reach speeds of 190mph?

Not every state has a mandatory seat belt law. Kentucky just passed one this year.

"Ben Roethlisberger, you've just piled your bike into the side of a Cutlass...where you going now?"

"I'm going to Disney...um...the Emergency Room!"
