Report: Roethlisberger didn't have motorcycle license
    ESPN.com news services

Ben Roethlisberger might have been riding without a license to drive a motorcycle when he was involved in an accident Monday.

Pittsburgh television station KDKA reported Tuesday that police are checking whether the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback had a license.

Roethlisberger was riding this motorcycle when he collided with an automobile in Pittsburgh on Monday morning.

Sources told the TV station that Roethlisberger had a license to operate a car but has never had a Pennsylvania motorcycle license.

Roethlisberger had a learner's permit to operate a motorcycle that expired March 29 but had never taken the written and driving tests for a motorcycle license, a source told KDKA.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Tammy Ewin told the station that police would "have no comment on licensing issues" until after the accident investigation.

Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, had surgery Monday after breaking his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash.

Roethlisberger remained in serious but stable condition after seven hours of surgery, according to Dr. Daniel Pituch, chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Mercy Hospital.

"He suffered multiple facial fractures," Pituch said. "All of the fractures were successfully repaired. His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury. And there are no other confirmed injuries at this time."

The doctors declined to release further information at the family's request.

ESPN.com's John Clayton confirmed that Roethlisberger also suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, has lost or chipped a number of teeth and has minor injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement.

Roethlisberger, 24, was not wearing a helmet, police said. He has said he likes to ride without one, a habit that once prompted a lecture from Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher.

In May 2005, Cowher warned him about safe riding after Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was injured in a motorcycle accident. Winslow tore knee ligaments and was lost for the season.

Roethlisberger has pointed out a Pennsylvania state law requiring helmets was amended in September 2003 to make helmets optional.

ESPN.com football writers Len Pasquarelli and John Clayton and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Following Ben Roethlisberger's motorcycle accident, Lil' John says it's OOOOOKAY!!! to wear a helmet when you drive a motorcycle.

I need to understand the disparity between the doctor's statement--broken jaw is the only injury--and the rest of the reporting, such as the 9 inch laceration. A 9 inch laceration isn't a minor booboo.

I'm remaining cynical about the doctor's report. They have every right to keep his condition confidential, and I have to believe they are doing just that. There's more to the story.

I have KWII's experience to fall back on and right after his incident, it didn't sound as bad. Next thing you know, he's out for the season. So I have cautious optimism Roethlisberger will be ready to go in September and I truly I hope so.

So let me get this straight ... Ben had no license and no helmet. And the old lady that was also part of this accident feels bad? I can understand why she does, but she shouldn't.

Checking for the "M" certification is not a priority among police officers.

    Nor among motorcycle salesmen, either.

And the old lady should feel bad --- she turned directly into the path of an oncoming vehicle and caused injuries to its operator.

Well, given that her illegal left turn caused it, she damn well should.

Yes, Ben was an idiot and a moron and probably a lot of other things for not having a license or a helmet, but bottom line is that the woman caused the accident.

You may be right 21, but I still find it hard to believe any doctor would stand up in a presser and say "no other confirmed injuries" if there was a 9-inch laceration in the back of his head.

Damage to his knees you could claim as being unconfirmed -- they just looked bruised by until they take X-ray/MRI they don't know if there's any other damage.

But, geez, you can't miss a 9-inch laceration. Somebody would have had to sew that up during the 7-hours in surgery.

If he's not certified to be riding a motorcycle and is in fact riding one he is more of a risk than that lady could ever be. And if he doesnt have a licence that means he can not fall into one of the parameters that would allow him to ride helmetless. That's two violations just for riding the damn thing.

Like I said, I can understand why she feels bad. But she hit a person who was operating a vehicle that he had no business operating. Thus, he should not have been on the streets. Play with matches, you get burned.
