RSVP requested for a news conference

Just received an invitation to a Division II soccer team's news conference, requesting an RSVP to get a credential for it.

There is so much going on in this market that I would doubt very many outlets would send a reporter.

I'd like to ask the PR person, "Why are you requesting RSVPs and issuing credentials for a news conference?" Seems like a waste of time to me.

I know I've made a post here calling for only credentialed media to be allowed at news conferences but how often do you recall being asked to RSVP to a news conference and have credentials be issued. (This does not include news conferences leading up to an event, like the Super Bowl.)

Only other time I can recall this is for the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor press tour. Probably some other boxing/MMA news conferences. I know RSVPs have been requested for various coach introductory news conferences.

Could they be wanting to make sure some media will be there, rather than go to the effort of having a press conference and then no one sbowing up?

When I worked in PR at a racetrack we'd ask for RSVPs on occasion. If it was a big sponsor announcement and the sponsor wanted to know exactly who was coming, or if it was an on-track stunt or some such where we had to be cognizant of who/how many came. Or sometimes we'd be unnecessarily secretive and didn't want the full contingent of quasi-media riffraff that would come just for fanboi time with a driver or to score a sandwich.

In your case, could it be a controversial firing or something else sensitive?

News conference is to introduce a new member of the ownership group.

After further review, this may draw some non-English language outlets.

I'm sure the news conference will be held even if no one RSVPs.
