    According to Cameron Stauth's outstanding book The Franchise, Jack McCloskey gave Bedford multiple chances.
    The book cites an instance where McCloskey goes to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at a suburban church looking for Bedford.
    Bedford was depicted as a reasonably intelligent person, but immature. Of course, there were the substance abuse issues he brought from Phoenix.

    I knew something weird was going on with that Toledo basketball team that was point shaving. Sammy Villegas went from one of the conference’s rising stars to a bad basketball player. I didn’t know if it was drugs or personal problems or what, but it was like he forgot how to play. It was not a surprise when the real story came out.
