Running music videos used to be cool thread

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by BYH, Apr 23, 2008.

  1. Wow, a lot of memories here. To those of us who never had seen anything like MTV before, its early-to-mid-'80s heyday was utterly captivating. Spending every night until 2-3 a.m. watching it was routine.

MTV now? Absolute crap. And that's not necessarily a slam on modern music. If MTV showed "current" videos, it would be infinitely better than what they show now.

Ah, "YO! MTV Raps." Produced for 10 years by the short white Italian kid from Long Island who lived two doors down from me my freshman year. Can't say I ever watched it (although I did see him on screen one year when he was working the VMA postgame show and was scrambling to put out a chair for an obviously ossified Courtney Love, who had crawled up the fire escape-like set on which Kurt Loder and Tabitha Soren were interviewing Madonna.
Mrs. Michael Lewis didn't age so well, but in the early '90s, dammmmmmmmmn...

Why do artists make music videos anymore?

    Are they watched?

Ed Lover was the man. I forget the other guy's name, but I do not even like rap music, and they got me to watch.

Dr. Dre (not to be confused with NWA's Dr. Dre).

    For the LA folks...
One night on a YouTube jag, I ran across a bunch of videos from MV3, a New Wave American Bandstand-type show from the early '80s. Besides the cheesy videos, there were live performances, including one from the pre-stardom Bangles (I discovered this tune on "Children of Nuggets," and it has an honored place on my iPod).

    Great thread idea.

Here's a few that pre-date MTV from the Rolling Stones:

Jumpin Jack Flash: nice make-up and shades, boys...

2000 Light Years From Home: god, acid is fantastic...

Ah, there's one I forgot. TDM became a big timer on Much, right? With Mike Williams and Erica Uhm, I mean, Ehm, as I recall.

Good luck on getting through this one without the dust bunnies getting you.
    Wow.
Yes. This is a remake of the old Offspring song.

YouTube has some great playlists with clips from Don Kirshner, Midnight Special, Tops of the Pops and Old Grey Whistle Test -- a really underrated show.
