    If your takeaway from the Rittenhouse thing is "the system worked," maybe we need to question the sanity of the system. Call it the Chigurh Corollary.

    If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?

    Good thread by Eichenwald covering the verdict, the charges and (deep in the thread) the media coverage, which didn’t cover as much as it could or should have.

    A settlement in the Elijah McClain case, who was murdered by police while walking home from the store.

    Aurora police engaged in repeated abuses against minorities, especially Black people, treated people of color differently from their White counterparts, repeatedly used excessive force, and failed to properly document interactions with the public, according to the investigation.

    Obviously, a big story out here. There have been issues with Aurora police for many years.

    So many sickening stories out there, but this one has just always seemed so heartbreaking.

    Sorry for responding now after most of you have moved on, but my day at school became one of the weirdest ones I’ve had to deal with so …

    So yes, his victims were white which I should have clarified in my comment. What I really was getting at—and yes this is at its heart an example of systemic racism—a White guy can now show up to an event where people are upset at the treatment of a black man and the subsequent trouble that follows with a gun and be absolved of any problems that arise because he had a gun.

    Because honestly, he didn’t live in that community. He didn’t work in that community. He wasn’t law enforcement. He was a vigilante. He showed up looking for trouble and then claimed self defense when he found it and a jury agreed. This sends the message that if your main claim to self defense is you were scared BLM and ANTIFA were about to cause problems, you will be acquitted. It’s a terrible message to the Black community and those who support the Black community.

    Jury nullification by black juries on black defendants in murder and other cases is a fact of life in cities like Baltimore and DC. Black juries are often reluctant to convict black defendants, even when the victims are black When the victims are white, Asian orHispanic, they aren’t even that reluctant. The rightwing constantly bemoans the failure of the Justice system to harshly punish defendants, except when rightwing defendants are on trial. TimothyMcVeigh would be acquitted today by an Oklahoma jury and be feted on Fox and OAN

    Length of time in prison:

    Martha Stewart------>five months
    Kyle Rittenhouse----->zero months

    So, because Rittenhouse was found to have been trying to defend himself including against the second and third guys he shot. So doesn't that mean if you go shoot five people for whatever reason and you're on the run afterwards and people are trying to corral you and you feel like your life is in danger, you can shoot them to defend yourself?
