My dad said that when his sister came to the states in the early 1960s, there were still occasional “no Irish need apply” signs. It’s not like this is 18th century stuff.

My daughter began teaching "Maus" just this week, and has used this text in previous years. She said she began by telling her students that (1) yes, this is the graphic novel that has been banned elsewhere, and (2) as they read through this graphic novel they will see some disturbing images, in that it is about the holocaust. This gave her students warning and also piqued their interest. On another note, one student had no idea what the holocaust was.

I'm not being purposefully obtuse here. Is there a difference between ethnicity and race? I googled for the difference in use of the terms, and get the point... they seem to define race as shared physical characteristics... but I've never seen "Jewish" listed on a form where one selects race.

Look at Nazi propaganda posters, and I'm pretty sure you'll notice the "physical characteristics" part.

Reading a book about a Vietnamese kid growing up in Carlisle PA in 70's after the fall of Saigon; the protagonist and his family locate to Carlisle after sponsors in that area step up for them. That almost brought tears to my eyes as I thought of those giving, compassionate (Caucasians) who set them up in an apartment, gave them clothes and bikes for the kids and was reminded of the loving people who did these things. Where are they now as Trumpism roars through our US? I literally always thought of those good people as the firewall between me and the racist, xenophobes shouting "go back to your country!" (this happened at the '89 WS Gm 4 to me in SF, he had no answer when I said I was born here and asked where he was from.) I hope they will still be around and help lift our country back beyond the racism of today.

Putting up a family is the very least we could do after what we did in Vietnam.
