Re: Studio 60 premiere (spoilers)

The best thing that could be happening to Studio 60 is that CBS' comedy lineup that is a huge reason why CSI: Miami is as highly-rated as it is, is clearly slipping when it comes to quality...

When in doubt, turn to HMS Pinafore for comedic genius.

They're actually parodying Pirates of Penzance, not HMS Pinafore.

Finally saw both episodes last night (had the premiere on Tivo) and I was pleasantly surprised by Amanda Peet. it's actually Sarah Paulson I'm having more trouble with. Can't tell if it's the writing, or Paulson herself, but I'm not getting all the love for her character's talent, especially given that she sounded awful in the musical number, when she's supposed to be a professionally trained singer. I didn't really love the number itself, either, because it's very hard to understand the lyrics. (though I do love the Gilbert & Sullivan gag, Sorkin seems to be a musical theater wonk.)

Loved, loved, loved the production number.

But, love it or hate it -- and I can totally see how someone would hated it -- you have to admire the big brass ones it took to put in on.

And, as someone else mentioned, I wonder if they're going to have the stones to keep putting sketches on the air. Because with the talent on that show, and a much better writer than anyone at SNL right now, there is a serious chance that the skits will be funnier than SNL's. Which would be awfully embarassing for NBC.

Plus, it's more writing for Sorkin, who keeps reminding us he has a problem hitting deadlines.
I'm wondering about how many of the sketches they're gonna show because we're supposed to believe that Perry's character is a comedic genius and if they show some skits that aren't that good the credibility will suffer. I think there will be very little if any skits shown, too much risk not a lot of reward, IMO. And I don't think Crazy Christians will ever be shown, not because of the controversial nature, but because if it wasn't good that would be really bad for the show's cred. I think it's gonna be mostly behind the scenes stuff, but then again if they're supposed to be putting together a show (in the show) presumably they'll have to show some of it. Damn that was a lot of "shows" in the last sentence.

Haven't seen Episode 2 - it's Tivo'd.

I gotta say it again, though.

Just from observing my friends, family and co-workers.....

I've got a feeling a WHOLE LOTTA people were watching MNF last night. I'm sensing a fairly substantial gap-narrowing b'tween cable and broadcast here.

I still contend it was nuts to put Studio 60 up against MNF.

I still contend that NBC should have kept it on Thursdays and given it ER's slot, especially since the CBS and ABC entries at that time aren't looking so hot.

That might happen next year. Unless ER really rebounds this year, I can't see it having many more years left.

From the preview, it looks like Peet gets more to do next week.
However, if we don't actually get to see "Crazy Christians," somebody should call out Sorkin.

I bet CC turns into Sorkin's McGuffin for the first season.

Re: Studio 60 premiere (spoilers)

Crazy Christians will be like one of those big payoffs on LOST. ... Maybe you'll see it at the end of this season ... maybe next ... maybe on the series finalé.

"Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."

I wonder if the quote above the clock will change each episode.

Hey: S60 and LOST both have prominent clocks, Christians, bald guys, token blacks and hot chicks with long, brown hair. Hmm.

NBC consistently screws over shows with placement. Prior to this past season, this was a network that had had two award-winning shows in the last five years -- Scrubs and Medium. And yet, there always seemed to be some sort of dumbass hand-wringing over where they were gonna run the two and when the season would start for each.

They had E-ring on last year, which wasn't a bad show by any stretch. They put it up against Lost. They've got S60 this year, and they put it up against MNF. The Office and Earl -- up against House last year to start (Had it not been for the move to Thursdays, I don't know that either show would be as popular).

I know they're battling for ad dollars and all, but damn, at this point, there's no way things could get worse for them. Why not stick the best new shows into less competitive slots, let 'em build an audience and then move 'em over to try and suck away viewers? There's a reason that Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal and Grey's Anatomy built up huge fanbases in a hurry -- they were on Sunday night and up against NOTHING.

And that 9 p.m. Thursday slot? If not S60, how about Medium? heck, anything but shirtty ER. When a helicopter crashes on a one-armed doctor, that's it. You've got nothing left in the bag.

Re: Studio 60 premiere (spoilers)

I'm not sure if this fact was brought up before or not, but I'm a little confused as to the time frame of the mythical shows. Does this show start at 11:30 p.m. Pacific Time? I guess I just assumed it was a Friday night, 7 p.m.-type thing except there were two references to it starting at 11:30 p.m. If that's the case, then why would people stay up until 2:30 on the east coast to watch TV?
