Running video games (and consoles) thread

PS3 is still close to being the best Blu-Ray player on the market, thanks to the built-in Wifi and firmware updates it gets. They're even going to make it 3D-compatible by the end of this year, so it seems pretty future-proof.

I've told my wife we'll be buying a PS3 if we ever want Blu-Ray. Of course, that's also my sly way of having more than a Wii in the house. It is more expensive that a lot of other Blu-Ray players you can buy, but IMO it's worth it.

Until then, I have a DVD player with component cables I got from a pawn shop for $20. Looks great. If money's at all an issue, that's your best bet.

That's what I was thinking. Unless you're itching for some PS3-only games..
Not necessarily. Having two consoles at one has never really worked out for me. The Wii is a poor example, but when I had it, I rarely played it and ended up selling it. I don't want the PS3 to become just a flashy Blu-ray player though Gomer makes a good point about eventually getting one.

When you look at it, you're essentially paying an extra $100 or so for the ability to play games on top of the PS3 being the most popular and one of the best Blu-Ray players out there. This, of course, doesn't count the fact that the extra money also covers Internet capability, streaming, etc.

Good deal, IMO.

Alright guys, I have a question before I go do this:

The wife and I were playing Final Fantasy XIII, and in the middle of play, the game froze. So we turned it off, and when we rebooted, it wouldn't read the disc. So we tried Rock Band, GTA, etc., and no dice. So then I tried a regular DVD and it went right to it.

We tried reformatting the hard drive and that didn't work.

So I started fishing around the Internet, and by all accounts, it seems the bluray lens is dirty. So I'm looking at trying a cleaner for it. But if there is an alternate solution to this problem, I would love to know.

I will hang up and listen to the answer on the air.

I have (had) the latest update before the reformatting last night and haven't checked if it's still there or not.

No, the disc itself is not dirty or scratched. None of them are.

Red Dead Redemption might be my favorite non-sports game ever. And I say that after just 30 minutes in the free roaming online mode.

I just read the reviews and it sounds like it is amazing. I'm looking for a game to take me a while to play, but I hate the GTA types of games. This looks like one of those. Ugh.

GTA on a horse is the simplest way to describe it.

That said, there were times once I started the single-player campaign that it felt like I was watching a movie. heck, I stopped at one point in the game to watch the sunset. It was beautifully rendered by Rockstar.

It looks interesting but I don't think it's my cup of tea. Then again, I'll be an idiot and shell out the $15 for the new maps for MW2. Skate 3 looks pretty solid for those who like that genre.
