Job Bank: Sports Designer, San Diego
Job description: If sports content and newspaper design are your passions, The San Diego Union-Tribune might have just the opportunity you've been looking for.

San Diego's busy sports year includes the Chargers football season, Padres baseball, college sports, horse racing at Del Mar and the Buick Invitational, just to name the tops of the waves. This year, we've also had daily special sections for the Winter Olympics, coverage of a sub-regional NCAA tournament in town, plus the final games of the World Baseball Classic.

We take pride in our tradition of great sports design, and we're looking for a designer with talent and energy to join that all-star team.

And then there's the beautiful, vibrant city of San Diego. It's a great place to live and a great, family-owned newspaper to work for. And did I mention that we don't know the meaning of Winter?

We'd prefer that candidates have a few years of post-college newspaper design experience, but we're willing to consider a less-experienced journalist with outstanding clips.

If this sounds like an interesting opportunity, send us your resume, cover letter and at least 10 of your best pages. Tearsheets or discs of clips are fine, but no email applications, please.

Unless otherwise instructed in the job description above, resumes and work samples should be sent to the contact name and address below:

All the references about the weather in S.D. must mean they'll be asking for the Union-Tribune discount. BTW, haven't they gone through like 15 sports designers in the last 2-3 years?

I don't know about 15. But I know they had two leave last fall.

I don't know about most papers, but a place that sends its two designers to the NY Times and Washington Post might be doing something right.

Did this opening come because they lost another one?

Yes. The guy who left went back to the paper from whence he came.

I've personally never worked in SD, but I hear the work environment is less than healthy. Difficult people, expectations, etc. (Don't jump down my throat, please -- just passing along what I've been told.)

is this one of those jobs where you live at near pverty level because it's so expensive to live there? we have a photographer that came from san diego state and he swore that cost of living was ridiculously high.

When I last saw the paper, it looked terrible IMO -- text everywhere you looked. Of course, that was five years ago, so it could be completely different.

Strangely enough, San Diego still isn't paginated.
