It was intriguing listening to Patrick today on the radio. Because, if you hadn't heard, he was the next guest after Seinfeld.

After Richards, Seinfeld did a few minutes of stand-up. Then he exited stage right. And passing Patrick near the green room, he said, "Gonna be tough to top that, huh?"

Patrick said he was damn near quivering as he prepared to go on.

Richards blew the Letterman appearance. He should have had a better plan before he went on the air anywhere. He rambled and said nothing. He should have stayed in hiding until he had a plan.

He should have claimed Tourette's or substance abuse problems or something. Otherwise, it's just bizarre and hateful.

I suspect that some of the laughing in the audience was because people thought they were seeing some Andy Kaufman-styled hoax. Letterman tapes at 5:30 (maybe even a bit earlier on Mondays, when they do two shows) and people are usually lining up hours earlier than that. I suspect some of the people in the audience were not yet up to speed on what happened with Richards, therefore thought it was some deal where he and Jerry were collaborating on something again.

Yes, Patrick said they began taping at 4:30 yesterday.

I'm guessing Seinfeld box sets sell just the same, no different. People loved that show, that didn't change any with this.

Seinfeld didn't do any stand-up, but he did continue to sit with Dave and talk about the DVD.

In an era when apologies are written by savvy public relations people and read in statements with the subject barely looking at the camera, Richards' mea culpa seemed genuine. I don't think he's that good an actor that he could stumble his way through something like that and not be real. To me, it wasn't too different from Hugh Grant after the hooker thing.

That said, my wife and I both laughed at the Afro-American thing. We haven't heard that since filling out applications in the 70s. It had us thinking about Soul Train and Good Times, that's how dated that expression is.

The good thing for Richards is it was one step above apologizing to a Negro.

The crowd laughed the first time he said it. He used it again a few minutes later.

I agree with Standman. That may have been the most genuine apology I've seen in a while. He looked really, really pained on camera, and his voice echoed that sentiment. I just think he really lost it and tried to be as offensive as he could possibly imagine to the hecklers who were pissing him off. And he accomplished that. But I think he regrets it, and not just because it's a huge blemish on his career.

I'm never going to be able to watch 'Transylvania 6-5000' the same way again.

By the way, the best lede for this story was on TMZ:
The jerk store called. They're running out of Michael Richards.
