I just read a review. He has a character called a "scrunt" that apparently kicks the shit out of a film critic.

This guy sucks beyond the pale, please do not go see this movie and further encourage this would-be genius.

Wow, that's real subtle on the part of MNS. ::) What a fucking baby.

I wasn't able to read your post first, so forgive me for going to see "Lady in the Water." I enjoyed it a great deal. Paul Giamatti was excellent. The story was even more fantastical than is usual for M. Night. I would recommend it.

No thanks. I wouldn't watch it at gunpoint.

You have been among the first to say anything good about it. The critics have ripped the shit out of it.

I haven't read a lot of reviews, but the only ones I have read (after the movie) were in the Washington Post and NY Times. They weren't rips, but to each his own.

Too bad Bart Giamatti's not around to have John Dowd investigate MNS and charge him with being a self-important douchebag.

Oh, and here's a cross-section of reviews from around the country. I don't think a 21 % approval rating is very good for M. Night Pretentious.

Just my opinion, but I didn't care for the movie. I was actually longing for it to end.

It was also very self-serving, in an annoying kind of way.

But outside the theater, reviews were pretty even. Some hated it, some loved it.

Are you actually comparing what is supposed to be objective sports writing to a film? Different mediums; apples and oranges.

If you did write, say, a column in iambic pentameter or as a nursery rhyme, then yes I would give you credit for being original.

Do you see movies to exclusively be entertained. or do you also want to think? MNS makes me think and entertains me when I watch his movies; I like that, others don't and that's fine.

I like to think as well as be entertained, but MNS is more interested in lecturing and telling us his world view is the right one.

I know the MNS supporters and detractors will never get on the same page, but let me ask you this: does it bother you at all that he sets up a fairy tale in which every adult character but one [an evil film critic, natch] IMMEDIATELY buys into the gibberish? Lock, stock and Shyamabarrel?

I'm sorry, as a sportswriter, my bullshit-ometer is always on, and I don't turn it off totally when I watch a movie. There's a difference between willing suspension of disbelief and piling absurdity upon absurdity until the whole house of cards collapses.

I don't dislike his movies because I'm an idiot who can't appreciate them--I dislike them because they're, in the immortal words of Casey Kasem, fucking ponderous, IMO. If you and others enjoy them and get something out of them, that's terrific.

Great post, but I did get a laugh out of the part in bold.

I don't mind three of his movies (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs) but could do without The Village but that's just me. I liked Unbreakable quite a bit. Maybe it's the comic book geek inside of me, but regardless, I enjoyed it. I picked up the DVD for like $8 the other day and have watched twice over the course of the weekend with each passing having picked up a few things I missed before.
