The last two people in this position have moved on to Bay Area News Group (East Bay Times) and, most recently, the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Lots of responsibility and opportunity to shine. If you have questions before applying, feel free to email me at zewing@bakersfield.com.

The Bakersfield Californian seeks an experienced copy editor and designer to join its team. The position is part of a universal desk, and though the majority of your time will be spent in sports, there will also be responsibilities and opportunities to do news and features pages, especially A1 design.

You'll read stories, send copy, photos and video to the web in our digital-first newsroom and design pages for the print edition. You'll also be part of a close-knit team with a fun working environment.

The Californian is a ~35,000-circulation daily in a metro area of about 700,000 about an hour and a half north of Los Angeles and two hours east of the Pacific Ocean at the base of California's San Joaquin Valley. We are privately owned and operated and print our own paper at a facility in north Bakersfield.

As for our award-winning sports section, we cover high schools as well as any paper our size. Kern County also is home to a busy auto racing scene (two local tracks, a drag strip that hosts national-level events, plus former Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick and Indy 500 champ Rick Mears are from Bakersfield). We also cover an AHL hockey team, a Division I university whose men's basketball team reached the NCAA Tournament last year and a junior college with a popular, powerful football program.

Salary is competitive and we offer health insurance and other benefits.

If interested, email a resume and other relevant materials to jobs@bakersfield.com.

Have swapped stories with the Californian many a time during prep playoffs. Good shop, good crew and a good sports town, even with the loss of the Blaze to the Carolina League and the D-League team to Prescott, Ariz. Heavy investment in multimedia as well.
