The Montana Standard, the daily newspaper in Butte, MT – the nation’s largest single historic district -- is seeking a sports editor to lead a staff dedicated to covering a region with a rich sports heritage. Our new hire also will collaborate with a team of 13 staffers statewide who have built an innovative and robust sports website (406mtsports.com).

We’re looking for someone who can unearth nuggets of compelling content for both a loyal print readership and an increasingly savvy digital audience in a hearty former mining city with a strong sports culture and a colorful personality. Two city high schools and the NAIA’s Montana Tech anchor our coverage, but our reach includes University of Montana Western in Dillon plus numerous small towns where sports are king. In addition, Silver Bow County is flush with people who are active year-round.

Duties include feature/game coverage and page-trafficking along with directing a second staffer. We emphasize content that will be well read not only in the Butte area but all of Montana. Periodic coverage of events of statewide importance for 406mtsports.com papers in Billings, Missoula, Helena and Hamilton also comes with the job. Coverage of University of Montana and Montana State University athletics by other 406 Sports staffers ensures hyper-local content.

Social and digital media skills are essential, and the ability to take photos/video is a big plus.

Once one of the most raucous mining towns in America, Butte is reinventing itself into one of the region’s most livable communities. It is a hard-working city that also serves as a tourist destination for people who appreciate history and the wealth of outdoor activities in the surrounding mountains.

The Montana Standard is an equal opportunity employer with a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, paid holidays and a generous paid time off policy. Salary depends on experience.

Might be the first posting I've seen without "award-winning" in the opening sentence. But I gotta give 'em credit for this . . .

Butte also has the fourth tallest statue in the United States.

Yeah, but Seattle has the only Lenin statue in the U.S. :)

I was a little disappointed to find that the Butte HS mascot isn't something mining related, like the Ishpeming (Mich) Hematites. But it's good to see Butte's neighbors in Anaconda representing as the Copperheads.

I've seen that. Interesting story behind it.

As an occasional long-ago user of Butte drinking establishments, I will say they had (have?) some surly fucking drunks there.

No recollection of any specific place. Was there for a few times for basketball and football.

The U.P. has quite a few cool high school mascot names. Must have been tough to fit the Hematites and Modeltowners in one-column headlines, though!
