The Covington News is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable sports editor to continue to grow its award-winning sports coverage. Applicants must have a desire to bring both high school and recreational sports to the reader in a broad and appealing way.

The sports editor is responsible for writing stories, developing and working with stringers and paginating a two-page section four times a week, including three editions of The Covington News and the weekly edition of sister paper The Rockdale News in adjacent Rockdale County.

InDesign and photography experience is a plus.

Interested applicants should send a resume and writing/design clips to Editor Jan Phillips at jphillips@covnews.com.

I freelanced a few games for them a few years back, and it was pretty clear that they operate on a shoestring, which to be fair isn't really any different from the vast majority of small papers. That's not really a criticism so much as an acknowledgement of reality. Now, I'm not claiming to have intimate knowledge of the pay structure in that shop. That said, be realistic. It's highly likely that this is an entry-level editor position, which means the salary isn't going to turn heads. If you're young and want to be a sports editor someday, this is a stepping stone. They know it. You should too.
