The Goshen News, an award-winning daily newspaper in northern Indiana, is seeking a motivated sports editor to join its newsroom team. The desired candidate will have outstanding writing abilities, strong organizational skills and well-honed journalistic instincts. He or she will also have a firm grasp of evolving trends in multimedia and social networks as well as eye-popping pagination experience. Night and weekend hours will be required.

Job duties will include the following:

Complete oversight of the planning, production and overall quality of a two-person sports department
Production of multimedia packages (videos, interviews and timely score and story updates) for the web
Writing two or three sports columns per week
Covering sporting events (writing, photography and video)
Designing between 20-25 sports pages per week on a PC-based InDesign system.

The Goshen News (circulation 12,000) covers eight local high schools, Goshen College (NAIA) and occasionally sporting events at the University of Notre Dame. The main focus of our sports coverage is – and will remain – hyper local. Goshen (population 31,719) is located 25 miles southeast of South Bend, 120 miles southeast of Chicago and 150 miles north of Indianapolis. It is home to a thriving downtown art and social scene, as well as the second-largest county fair in the nation.

Desired qualifications for the sports editor position include a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) and at least 5 years experience at a daily newspaper. Previous management experience is preferred. Please email a resume, design portfolio, writing samples (including columns, features and game stories), references and salary requirements to Managing Editor Michael Wanbaugh (michael.wanbaugh@goshennews.com) by June 9. Please, no phone calls.

Need five years to run a 2-person department? With that requirement they ought to be paying well.

Eight high schools in a city of 31,000?

Other schools in the coverage area... Wawasee, Concord, Northridge, just to name a few ... possibly Jimtown and Northwood.

Stu Schwartz must be retiring, I'm guessing? Good people working there. Crossed paths with them often when I was SE in Kendallville.

Ah so you are the dummy who let Andy freelance for you in Kendallville? Or are you the guy before that guy?

As far as Goshen goes, it isn't a bad town. Like the ad says, not far from South Bend. If you are a sports editor at a small shop this would be a good place to promote up to. Pretty good town that is paid attention to by South Bend as well as Fort Wayne (little over an hour away).

I'm the guy who hired Andy. :) Was all set to hire him as my ASE before they eliminated the position.

And the response has apparently blown up the hiring editor's inbox.
