Hattiesburg Publishing, Inc. - proud publisher of The Lamar Times (5,000 circ. weekly) and The Petal News (3,000 circ. weekly) - is looking for an enthusiastic, energetic and forward-thinking sports nut to lead its sports department.

As Sports Editor, you'll have the chance to cover six different championship-caliber high schools (large and small) as well as the University of Southern Mississippi. In the past 12 months, our high schools have won 10 state championships in multiple sports - including three consecutive 2A baseball championships by the Sumrall Bobcats - USA Today's No. 1-ranked high school baseball team in the nation. Although football and baseball reign supreme in this neck of the woods, candidates should be well-rounded enough to provide quality coverage of all of our local sports.

You'll be responsible for not only filling the pages of both newspapers with compelling local feature stories, columns, in-depth game coverage, and photographs on a weekly basis, but also laying out your own pages using Photoshop and Quark XPress (both Mac- based). In addition, you'll be expected to work with the Publisher to maintain and grow our new sports website, www.PineBeltSPORTS.com. In addition to sports coverage, the ideal candidate will be expected to contribute news stories as a general staff writer as needed.

Hattiesburg is a growing and progressive community located in the beautiful Pine Belt of southern Mississippi - less than an hour drive to the Gulf Coast and less than two hours drive to New Orleans. The Hub City is also home to numerous current and former professional athletes and coaches including Brett Favre (Minnesota Vikings), Todd Pinkston (Philadelphia Eagles), Kris Mangum (Carolina Panthers), Jonathan Papelbon (Boston Red Sox), Paul Maholm (Pittsburg Pirates), and Coach Ray Perkins (Univ. of Alabama, NY Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers).

We're looking for someone willing to roll up their sleeves, build relationships with some of the finest coaches in the south, and help us continue to grow our award-winning publications. If you think you have what it takes, send your resume along with five of the best examples of your writing to Publisher David Gustafson via email to david@hubcityspokes.com

It's a little better than a shopper, but only a little.

What I like best about this golden opportunity is you get to cover preps, a university, write gamers, features and columns, shoot photos (and presumably edit them), lay out the pages while having the privilege of maintaining and growing a brand-spanking-new web site. Oh yes, you even get to contribute to the news side when you might have the time. You might even get paid somewhere just north of the poverty level.

I cannot imagine posting an ad looking for a "sports nut." But that's just me.

At least they were courteous enough to explain who Brett Favre is in the ad.
