    Description:
    The Covington News is looking for a sports editor to join its award-winning newsroom. The ideal candidate will have experience in the field as a sports reporter and some layout and design experience. The sports editor covers the three high schools in Newton County as well as the Newton County Recreation Commission and middle school sports. A degree in journalism is required or candidates must have at least three years experience in a professional news organization.

    Duties include:

    Covering high school sports in three high schools, middle schools and recreation leagues
    Laying out sports section for each edition, three times per week
    Helping with other editorial duties including writing articles for special sections
    Shooting sports photography
    Shooting video to be edited by in-house production team
    Breaking stories on the internet
    The Covington News publishes Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays but the reporting goes on daily via the internet.

    The ideal candidate will be able to work flexible hours and must be able to work nights and Saturdays. Almost all games are at night and the sports editor puts together the Sunday edition Saturday. Candidates with newsroom experience are preferred. College paper experience will be considered with a degree. Candidates with a firm grasp of news values and a working knowledge of InDesign will move to the top of the list.

    Three years experience to cover middle school sports. Awesome.

    In many cases, three years experience for a job like this means either college newspaper counts or they've already got one candidate who has a decent resume.
