    The Kokomo Perspective, a weekly newspaper with a 31,000 circulation in Kokomo, Ind., is looking for a fulltime sports reporter to cover local sports, as well as assist with other stories and special sections. The Kokomo Perspective is the leading news source in Howard County, which is located 45 minutes north of Indianapolis and boasts a population of 83,305. The city is home to the new, state-of-the-art Kokomo Municipal Stadium, a baseball stadium that's home to the Kokomo Jackrabbits of the college summer Prospect League. In May 2016, the stadium also became the home to Kokomo Mantis FC soccer team of the Premier Development League. The candidate who fills this position will be a self-starter who writes effectively on deadline and is able to develop story ideas, makes and maintains community contacts, takes quality photos, paginates using Adobe InDesign, updates the website and social media, and proofs pages effectively.

    Essential Responsibilities:

    • Develop and generate stories for the sports section, including reporting on and writing previews of sporting events and developing feature stories on athletes and their efforts
    • Develop and generate stories for the annual Youth Sports Report editions, Football Preview edition, Basketball Preview edition, and Soapbox Derby edition
    • Paginate sports sections and special sports editions
    • Develop and maintain community contacts among athletes, coaches, administrators, sports clubs, and others involved
    • Direct freelance photographers to assignments
    • Photograph sporting events
    • Assist with other non-sports-related special editions throughout the year
    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
    • Previous sports writing experience preferred
    • Experience in photography
    • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office
    • Strong understanding of grammar, punctuation, and AP style
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
    • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license
    • Available for weekends and evening work as needed
