    Description:

    Love covering sports?

We have the job for you.

The McAlester News-Capital — one of the best small newspapers in America — is accepting applications for the position of sports editor. We are looking for a journalist passionate about sports coverage and who takes great pride in their work. The right candidate will also be well versed in digital technologies and will be responsible for some video content.

The beat encompasses coverage of football, basketball, and baseball along with all other sports in southeast Oklahoma's Pittsburg County.

Football is huge here. The starting quarterback for the McAlester Buffaloes just signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Oklahoma, and the Buffaloes are regularly in the running for a state title. But we are seeking to produce content that goes well beyond the final scores and statistics from the field. We want the story behind the story — the touching features and compelling story lines often found beneath the surface.

This is a vibrant community in a truly gorgeous part of the country.

There is an abundance of great stories available for a journalist willing to work the beat and hustle.

Perhaps most importantly, though — we offer a positive work environment. We value our employees.

The successful candidate will have a degree in journalism or a related field. Our sports editor must be able to post live to the web, post short video interviews with key players and coaches and take compelling photos. Layout/design experience is preferable but not a requirement. We offer health benefits, paid vacation, 401K and paid sick time. For consideration please send a cover letter, resume and some writing samples to Editor Glenn Puit at gpuit@mcalesternews.com.

Been there. It's really not all that gorgeous. And it's a CNHI paper. Be warned.

There is a huge lake right outside town and some nice scenery not far to the east. But yeah, CNHI is a dealbreaker.
