Anyone can write a game story. The Northwest Herald, a 34,000 daily circulation daily media outlet in Chicago's far northwest suburbs, is seeking a reporter who can provide unique enterprise content for our many formats, from digital to social media to print.

We want a reporter who is driven to go beyond the results and explore sports issues throughout our coverage area while also breaking news and providing extensive coverage of our local and high school sports scene, including bringing robust content to our high school sports website, McHenryCountySports.com.

The ideal candidate will be an idea person who has experience breaking news, producing unique enterprise content and engaging readers digitally.

Our department has a strong tradition of producing innovative journalists with plans for advancement. We plan for that tradition to continue.

This position requires a thorough understanding of AP style and demonstrated ability to excel on deadline. Must have a valid drivers license, dependable transportation and proof of insurance.

This is to replace Joey Kaufman, who left last Friday to cover UCLA football for the Orange County Register:

Will you be considering applicants nationwide?

The three full-time reporters we have hired since I arrived came from Michigan, California and West Virginia. People won't be eliminated based on where they live.

I'm in Southern California, so that's great to hear. Thank you for the response. I look forward to your decision.

This seems to come up every so often. What gives?

It's a good paper for its size. My guess is that it loses talented people to bigger opportunities.

This would be a nice gig in my opinion.

I grew up not far from this newspaper's home base and would consider this a fine opportunity. One of the state's top high school football programs is right in the heart of the circulation area, and the high school sports in general are pretty good. The level of newspaper competition also may be a cut above the usual because the Daily Herald from Arlington Heights also covers the area, and the Chicago papers provide some coverage there, too. Crystal Lake is about an hour from Chicago either by car or commuter train.
