    Position:
    Seeking Sports Reporter
    Location:
    Wheeling, West Virginia
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: Negotiable
    Ad Expires:
    February 27, 2014
    Job ID: 1559724
    Website: http://theintelligencer.net

    Description:

The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, award winning dailies in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle, are seeking an up-and-coming sports reporter who has an eye toward the future. We focus on local high school sports played in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference, one of the largest conferences in the nation. The ECHL's Wheeling Nailers also call our city home, as does one of NCAA Division II's top basketball programs, the West Liberty University Hilltoppers.

Primary duties include game coverage and feature writing, along with pagination one or two days per week. We work on deadlines each and every day, so attention to detail is a must.

Requirements include a college degree; experience is preferred, but we will train the right candidate. Strong reporting and writing skills also are needed, as is an understanding of AP style. The right candidate will be a good communicator as well, working with the coaches and athletes in our area. A valid driver's license and a reliable vehicle are required.

Salary is negotiable; we offer health/dental benefits, paid vacation, and a 401(k) program.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume, along with work samples, to Managing Editor John McCabe at jmccabe@theintelligencer.net or via regular mail at

Does anyone have any information on this paper. This seems like a good gig. Close-ish to my family in Maryland. Have potential job in NC, would applying be a good idea?

Don't know much about the paper, but it's an Ogden company. And from other comments and my own experience, it seems to be a company to avoid if at all possible.

I know the sports editor and one of the writers there. Good group of guys there. Had thought of going there myself but like where I'm at and don't want to move yet for same pay.

  5. I'm pretty familiar with Ogden and I can tell you it's not a bad chain, but could be much better. There haven't been layoffs that I know of, but they've been eliminating some positions when employees leave. Also, they all have the same website layout and it looks like something from the 1990s (as in you can't hyperlink unless you know html code).

That said, pay's not bad (at least around my parts) and like I said, there have not been big layoffs.

I would love to see someone go to work in one of the Ohio Valley towns and really cover the high school teams. It's mostly just stenography. There are some great stories in these towns, good and bad. (See Steubenville) Plus, you're close to Pittsburgh. Of course, you won't have any money to spend, unless you get hot at the casinos...
