Question: I'm currently an SE at a weekly shop in Texas, with a circ. of 127,000, covering 10 HSs and an af2 football team.

I've recently got an offer from a tri-weekly in Florida to be an ASE. The pay's a tad lower, they'll help with relocation, and their circ. is 20,000, covering 3 Hs and a community college.

Is this considered a step up if I was to accept the Florida job, or am I better off where I'm at?

It all depends on what you want the next step to be.

Is the ASE gig basically night editor? If you want to be a reporter, then it's a bad situation. But if you want to copy edit, then it's a good move.

Are you desperate to get to the daily life? Then this might be the step that leads to a daily paper.

How much are you able to do with the current gig? Freedom from bosses? Enterprise? Features? Or is just gamers and photos? Compare that with the new job.

All good points, actually. I just really want to get back to a daily tho, and while this still isn't quite there, it's a move forward in that aspect. The money is also just starting, a raise will come after a probation period so I'll end up making more than I do now.

At my current gig, I have tons of freedom. Columns, features, gamers, enterprise, you name it. It's a one-man sports show. I'm that dude.

At the new gig, I'll do some new design and a lot of writing still. Plus, it'll still be like working deadline because they go out Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. So the primary HS work days (Tues and fri) will still be like a daily deadline.

    Thanks for the input yall.
