They have definitely done double tribals before.

Really? I admit, I didn't actually research it or anything, but I couldn't remember that ever happening before.

Regardless, I stand by my point. I guess the unpredictability is supposed to be part of the fun and interest of the show.

I find it disingenuous and manipulative, though, and I hate that it does so to a point of thereby making "reality" fake and not indicative of what probably would happen if the game was played straight up.

Double tribals in many seasons. Different circumstances for immunity idols (at the camp, exile island, replaced so they keep Russell in the game, etc.). Different merge points (10, 12). They have to shake it up, otherwise it would become too predictable if the players could plot out their strategies by knowing the turning points.

I know it definitely happened a couple of seasons ago. I think it was in JT's season. They did the exact same thing from last night, with the same challenge, the same stipulations. The only difference was at the losing team's tribal, the winning team (IIRC) chose not to eat the food in front of their opponents. At least that's how I seem to remember it anyway.

And how great would it be to have Boston Rob and Russell as the final two? What an amazing final tribal that would be. It won't happen, they're both too good at this game to take that chance, but damn, that would be fun.

They have to do double eliminations because they started with 20 people. The format, I think, lends itself to 16 players. Any more they start with more than that so they don't have to skip a tribal if someone gets hurt or quits. But, as they go along, they still need to whittle their numbers down, so they do a double tribal. if James had left they game, I doubt they would have.

I think they know that the fewer episodes the better, within reason. They almost always either have a week where it's not on or they have a recap episode at the halfway mark.

I think one of the best things about Survivor is how they keep finding ways to twist the game along the way. I'm always amazed at the idiots who suddenly get the numbers and think they'll coast to the end. That happened way back on the Africa season (like the second or third season I think). One tribe was just dominating, so they came up with the deal where the tribes were reshuffled by the luck of the draw.

Why is it that people come on this show proclaiming to be fans, and then are surprised when things get switched up on them? they've been pulling these tricks forever now.

Tyson...what a stupid bastid. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Probst called it the dumbest move in the history of the game. Can't argue that.

Nice to see Rob's stupid face during the reading of the votes, too. That said, Russell's donezo. I'd be shocked if he made it through another tribal.

dumber than james being voted off with 2 idols in his possession? dumber than the kid who gave up immunity at tribal and then was voted off?

I actually thought Tyson's foul-up was worse than James letting himself get voted off when he had two idols in his possession.
The reason: James' mistake was stupid, but I can at least think of an advantage he would have gained had it worked.
I cannot think of any advantage Tyson would have gained.

Erik giving up the immunity necklace to Natalie in Fans v. Favorites remains the all-time blunder.
