I know you're right, Ragu. But I LOVE me some Blue Cheese BBQ Bacon Burger from Ruby Tuesday or Red Robin every other week or so.

I try to eat well every day. Carrots sticks instead of chips or fries. Side salad instead of desert or fries. Water or juice instead of soda. Banana instead of Snickers. But once in a while, I need to be a glutton. And I'm glad the workouts help give me a little ability to do that.

Ragu I agree as well and I don't meal out every day just because I worked out earlier. If there are approximately 19 meals in a week (breakfast on Saturday? Yeah..right), I probably eat what I would consider a 'healthy to very healthy) meal 15 of those. The other 3 may be marginal with the last one being like last night's main course.

I used to live within walking distance of a great southern college football meat and three restaurant (which I will not disclose) and I would eat there at least three times a week. If not there, then it was Sonic.

I can remember exactly 1 trip to Jack in the Box in the last two months.

Back to the previous topic, it does my heart good to see so many people working out solo. I've been meeting a lot of people who find working out alone "boring" and can't do it without at least one other person in tow. Whatever happened to working out for your own reasons? It's never been a social thing for me. Never.

As for the diet, I've started reading nutrition labels in the last couple of years. The only measure of how much good it's done me will be on the clock after my next major triathlon.

Idaho... in the pool... now! :)

Serve, I'm leaving for the pool and treadmill in 45 minutes.

Saturday morning, I may do a dry run tri on my own. Go to the gym, swim 750m, run for 2-3 miles and then go on the group ride with my club at 9 a.m.

Then collapse into a pile at home where my son will pester me to light the candles on his birthday cake.

I've been told that if you workout with a partner you are more apt to go because you don't want to let that person down. For me that was always an excuse...'Man, do you want to work out?' 'Yeah, me neither, let's go play golf'

That said I LOVE the time in the gym by myself. It's quite personal for me and this is my goal.

It can go either way. If you're both pretty committed to it, it can be great because we all have those days that we just don't want to go, but if you friend calls you and asks you to go, you're more likely to. If you're partner is pretty lazy and anytime you want to bail they're right with you, obviously that's not ideal.

In terms of a workout partner at the gym, that has it's pros and cons as well. It's nice to have a spot and someone to push you, but it also takes twice as long to get through the workout.

I'm back. Did 20 laps or 1,000 meters. My freestyle still sucks beyond sucking -- I have horrible breathing technique and just switch to the breast stroke after half a lap.

Also jogged 1.5 miles on the treadmill.

Here's a question. For those of us who write and work the desk--which can mean working till 1 am one day then having to be somewhere at maybe noon the next, when do you work out?

I generally find I can stick to it best when I can go the same time every day, but that ain't happening right now.

    Idaho,

Technique should be the last of your worries. My first two weeks back in the pool I just flailed about but I kept to freestyle. I was pulling my head up, breathing every stroke etc. etc. It was gross.

I would highly suggest taking advantage of a kickboard and short fins to work on your kick...then put a pull buoy between your legs and work on your arms. It's wonderful.

Omar, I don't have a newspaper man's hours. More of a magazine / flexible time (just get the work done and no one cares how you did it) hours. I try to keep regular hours because I need regularity for my mental health. That means being at work anywhere from 8:30 to 9:45 am and staying usually until 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. most nights. I get up at 5:45 a.m., allow myself enough time to shake the cobwebs off and then go exercise. That usually gets me to the office between 9 and 9:30. It just means getting up earlier than I would have. I suspect that can work no matter what hours you work. What time do you get up each day? Set the clock back to accommodate a workout and make it a priority. Only warning is, your heart has to be in it. I do it because I NEED it. If you don't have that, it will be a chore and it won't last, not something you can do by rote every day.

It's rough many days to find a time to work out. I've gotten lucky in that my gym has a spin class MWF at 9:30. I'm able to drop my kindergartner off at school and check the other kid into the on-site kid center while I spin. I get home most nights I'm at the desk around 1:30 a.m. and that takes out waking up at 5 a.m. to get in an early workout.

Finding time to go for long bike rides or anything that means not being within 50 yards of my little boy is a challenge. By the time mom is home to watch the kids, I often have to go to the office or to a game. I finally just rode the bike 15 miles to work last night and caught a ride home with a co-worker that lives in the same general direction as I do.

I'd do stuff on sundays but we've decided to leave that day as a family only day as much as possible. So Saturday morning is one of the rare times I can go for a 3-hour bike ride and that usually comes with some guilt for leaving my wife on one of the few times we can spend together.

Soooo, I just make a little time here and there and hope to find an open block every now and then. When summer rolls around, my teenager will be home all day so I might get some weekday rides in and I'm looking forward to that.

10 miles on the new bike today. Didn't really break a sweat but Friday is my day off so I kind of just took it easy.

So Idaho, the bike. is. awesome.
