What defines a good walking sneaker? I'm wearing the same old Reeboks that I wear for everything else. I haven't been going very far or very fast so far, though I always walk fast compared to most of the people around me so it's kinda hard to tell.

I have cranky feet, so I'd like to avoid shoe shopping if I can. Yes, I know I'm a weird gal!

I know that New Balance and Nike make shoes specifically designed for walking. They're made differently than ones designed for running. Padding in different places and such.

I can't stress enough the importance of shoes that provide adequate foot support. For years my dad wore this pair of loafers that were so worn out that the sides were practically the sole. He refused to stop wearing them constantly because they were comfortable. Now he's having steroid injections in his back as he has a slipped vertebrae. To top things off it's also pinching a nerve which causes him to routinely lose control of his left leg which results in his falling down. Did I mention that he's a big sumbitch as well? If the steroid injections don't make things better he'll have some back surgery to look forward to. Small price to pay for comfort.

My dad just bought a pair of Mizuno shoes though I don't know if they're running or walking. PaperDoll, New Balance specifically makes its shoes in a wide (no pun intended) variety of widths so you might look in that direction. I also second 21's suggestion of finding a hill and negotiating that repeatedly. A few times at first and then as you get in better shape, a few more times.

You get a thumbs-up for making some positive changes with your lifestyle. You'll be a better human for it, believe me.

Basic rule of thumb: Walking up one flight of stairs is the equivalent of going down two flights.

I have been a Nike guy my entire life. After hearing good things about New Balance, I figured I'd give them a shot. I find a relatively cheap pair of walking shoes.

At this point, I'll never go back to Nike. The New Balance are phenomenal. I just got back from Disney World. Ten hours on my feet, and I don't have any soreness. New Balance are spectacular, and it's a bonus that they're made in the United States, which means no child labor.

You'll probably want to slow that down to about 2 1/2 pounds a week.

After I lost 85 pounds over the course of a couple of months, my gallbladder got a bit cranky and had to be removed.

Of course after the surgery, I've gained the weight back.

New Balance shoes are phenomenal. I'm also a HUGE fan of Skechers. They're damned comfy as well.

How did you lose so much weight so fast?

I've lost 10 pounds in about 10 days, and it has taken a lot of agonizing exercise. I just took two Tylenol because I can barely walk after doing a 2-mile run on Tuesday and visiting a theme park on Wednesday.

But I think this running is the only way that I'm really going to drop pounds. Apparently, my body burns about 3,500 calories a day and burns 500 additional calories from a 20-minute run. I'm eating 2,000 calories a day. So I'd lose four pounds per week if I ran 20 minutes every day.

Remember folks, quick weight loss = quick weight gain later.

I'm with Heineken here. How do you lose 85 pounds in two months? Wow.

As for me, I figured the first week was probably water weight. I don't expect to lose five pounds a week. But I wouldn't complain if I did because a) I'm changing my lifestyle via Weight Watchers so I won't gain it back and b) I'm getting back into running (walking at first, then jogging after I drop enough weight, then running after I drop even more weight). This weight is coming off for good.

Good for you. When we're both thin, we can chase down the idiot from Women's Basketball Magazine and give him a piece of our mind.

I don't know how much you weigh at the moment, but don't wait too long to get running. I weight 338 pounds, and I'm jogging. I believe I'm running about a 10-minute mile at the moment. That's not very much faster than walking, but my legs and lungs are adapting. My time will drop by several seconds as I drop pounds and adapt to the exercise. Then I can increase my distance. I'm starting with 1.5 miles because that's a trip to the end of my neighborhood and back. I'll be increasing it to three miles later this summer with the hope of going six miles by Christmas.
