The Ray Rice Elevator Video

Here's an issue I have with this. It seems like it's double jeopardy.

The league knew the incident happened. Goodell issues the punishment. Now that the full video comes put, he issues a second punishment because he is embarrassed instead of just issuing the more severe punishment first.

He's doing this out of embarrassment, not for punishment.

Seems to me is that it's a private matter and the league is not bound by criminal law.

Also possible that The League told Rice that 2 games could become more if the
facts changed.

I know it's a private business, but it seems like he's now being punished twice for the same crime. Had they just given him this as the original punishment, I don't think anyone would have had a problem with it. Instead, they look like they're overreacting to the video.

And the League should have announced that if more evidence arose, the punishment would be increased.

This whole thing blows my mind.

First, two games was sufficient penalty. Then, the NFL rethought their policy, and decided 6 games was appropriate going forward, for first time offenders.

Then, the video comes out, and the Ravens cut him, and the NFL suspends him indefinitely.

So, when the next guy pops his wife/girlfriend, will the penalty be 6 games, unless it's on video?

Perhaps they had the contingency punishment in place for if/when the video surfaced. They had to have known the TMZs of the world were on the hunt.

And, fork the Ravens and the NFL for trying to distance themselves from Ray Rice now.

They knew what happened. They helped peddle the "provocation" defense. And now they want to act like they were mislead.

The NFL needs to bring in someone like Louis Freeh -- or Freeh himself if he's healthy enough -- to do an investigation. Did anyone from the Ravens or the NFL talk to Jenay? Did anyone pressure her to "apologize" for her role?

People need to be fired over this, and it shouldn't start with the PR guy. He gets paid to tell/sell the company line. Who came up with the plan? Who approved it?

Ray's getting another chance after he attends counseling. Bet your house on that.

First transgression. Big transgression, but first transgression.

Absolutely not. Not good enough anymore to be worth the trouble.

And this is nice ...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Banter by two Fox News Channel hosts about video showing football player Ray Rice hitting his future wife is under fire.
The "Fox & Friends" hosts, Brian Kilmeade and Steve Doocy, made their on-air comments Monday while discussing newly released video showing Rice hitting Janay Palmer in an elevator in February.
Kilmeade said that the lesson to be learned was, in his words, "take the stairs."
Doocy responded that the message is to remember that elevators include cameras.
The comments, which were criticized as inappropriate by media observers and in online posts, will be discussed on Tuesday's "Fox & Friends," the channel said.
Rice was let go by the Baltimore Ravens on Monday and suspended indefinitely by the NFL after the video's release. His lawyer, Michael Diamondstein, declined to comment.

Here's another thing to chew on: what if the video would have come out after Rice had come back and played in a regular-season game? Would the league have been able to punish him again after he had served his punishment?

Goodell interviewed Janay this summer - with Rice sitting next to her. Textbook case of what should NOT happen with an abuse victim.

The video should bring you no greater understanding of the situation than that of someone who won't watch it.

See, I do agree with you. We know he punched her. Did we really have to see the punch to believe it, and get angry enough to not want to see Ray Rice play football again?

For a lot of people, the answer is apparently yes.

And, lots of people are furious that the CIA destroyed videos of waterboarding. The media would love to show those videos.

But, no one wants to watch the ISIS videos, and we don't even know if the person in charge of coming up with our response to ISIS' actions has watched it.

They won the Super Bowl because of his 29.5 on 4th and 29. An all-time play.

But if Vick got a second chance, Rice will.

The Ravens press conference is the biggest display of poor public relations and damage control I've ever seen.

Isn't Goodell's coming up soon? That one has flustercluck-in-the-making written all over it.
