The Veep Thread

I agree with Fenian (shocking, I know). Both veeps must be governors or former governors.

Obama would be wise to pick Richardson or Strickland.

McCain would be wise to pick Jindal or Pawlenty.

I say this as someone who loves McCain: if he picks Jindal, I am voting Obama. Not because I don't like Jindal. The exact opposite. Someday, I hope I get the opportunity to vote for Jindal for president. But Louisiana needs him more as governor than the country needs him as vice president.

That's a very good point.

Maybe Christ or Palin, but I wouldn't want to see Romney.

OK -- Ed Rendell said today the guy he thinks Obama should pick is Joe Biden...

What about that?

What about Rendell? He picks up a shaky Pa. for Obama, makes the Clintonites happy, and brings administrative experience.

Unstoppable.

I'll convince you to jump on the Hagel or bust bandwagon yet, Zeke.

Hagel, retiring, not really a Senator, and not a D senator, which is the real deal-breaker.

Fenian,

I am not being snarky when I ask this, just curious. If Barack Obama came to you and asked you for a list of five people you believe he should consider for veep, who would be on that list?

1) Strickland (Let it never be said that zag can't convince me on something).
2) Schweitzer
3) Hagel
4) Napolitano
5) HRC

Can someone of a conservative bent tell me why McCain would pick Pawlenty?

He's young, that's all I can think of.

I don't think for a second he can deliver Minnesota. Not for a second.

Why don't you think he can deliver Minny, Zeke?

Perhaps he can help deliver Wisconsin or Iowa.

Does anyone think Romney deliver Massachusetts for McCain?

Minnesota always goes democrat. heck, if it went democrat in 1984 and 1988, it's a pretty good sign that's not going to change this year.

Trivia time:

Name the last VP that "delivered" a state or that made a huge difference in a swing state.

Last I checked, he's not all that popular there.

I mean, he's pretty well liked, but not enough to flip that state.

He'd have no impact in Wisconsin. And Iowa's gone, for McCain, at least against Obama.

Mizzou --

No, but that wouldn't be why he was picking Romney -- it would be to appease the bidness part of the base.

I was honestly asking about Pawlenty, because I'm not sure what it gains McCain except youth.

The base loves him. He is a winner -- he was one of the few GOPers to win a heavily contested race in 06. In West Wing terms, he is Ray Sullivan to McCain's Arnie Vinick.
