UPDATE: Ozzie Guillen suspended five games

When people are jumping into makeshift rafts with the idea that they will either land in Florida or die and both options are better than staying in Cuba, you bet your ass the rank-and-file have a seething hatred of Castro and don't want to see the manager of their favorite ballclub admiring him.

OK, "they don't want to see the manager of their favorite ballclub admiring him."

Well, guess what? Short of firing him, that's exactly what they have. His (IMO) very qualified "admiration" was first noted in 2008 and has not changed and will not change, regardless of any fines or suspensions.

So what benefits, exactly --- TANGIBLE BENEFITS --- will the seething rank-and-file Cuban community receive when all is said and done?

It tells them that their ballclub is mindful of their concerns and complaints and that it has taken appropriate action to deal with issue. If he does so again, I think it's a pretty safe bet they'll fire him.

If you own a Kosher deli in NYC and your manager, who has increased sales at your business by 30 percent in the five months he's been working there, says in conversation one day, "That Hitler sure knew how to lead. I don't agree with what he did, but I admire how he got Germany to follow him," are you going to tell the customers who complain they are politically-correct whiny assholes? Of course not.

But this guy has done a great job making money for you, too, so you don't want to fire him. What are you going to do? You're going to suspend him, tell your customers he has been disciplined, make him apologize and tell him to shut the fork up when it comes to Hitler in the future.

I don't see the problem here.

Take it to PMs and have a nice Ozzie Guillen endorses molesting collies day.

You think Cubans living in Miami need to be prodded to be upset that the manager of their local baseball team said something favorable about Fidel Castro? Your conclusion is that well-to-do movers and shakers have caused this outrage in the Cuban community?

And some of you thought he had no reading comprehension.

Look, let's be frank here:

You've spent your entire life and career in a very small world that could not be any further culturally from Miami (or any place with a bit of diversity and nuanced ideas).

So obviously, your take on the Cuban population's reaction to Guillen's Castro statement is quite predictably ignorant as all heck. Not surprising from someone who was so proud of not paying attention to the world around him.

But it's just . . . you're hopelessly uninformed here.

No one thought that.

Yes, they may think I'm a big abrasive jerkface, or just an unbridled a-hole.

But I can certainly read. Write, even.

Sometimes.

Exactly. Of all the insults to level, you go with reading comprehension?

Yes, you are abrasive. I've never called you an a-hole, or would I. But you are abrasive.

And there's just no damn reason for it. I seriously doubt that by now, you even remember what pissed you off in the first place about me. And if you did, that might even be a bigger problem for you.

And Uncle, please don't suppose to understand anything going on between Piotr and myself.

And dixie ... we'll go to PMs when we damn well want to go to PMs. Have a nice Cuban brouhaha day.

I think many are missing the point. The Marlins just built a new stadium. MLB wants baseball to work in South Florida and needs the Cuban community to make that happen. The suspension is better than being fired and the group was prepared to fight for Ozzie's ouster.
Again, Ozzie needs to just STFU and manage his team to a winning season. He seems to have a problem doing that. He's a great quote and is actually great for the game. Players love him. He just needs to get a grip on what he says in public. He's a PR disaster waiting to happen if uncheck.

Oh, enough with the flattering of yourself. I agree and disagree with whomever I wish. You just happen to be prolific in your idiocy.

I mean . . . you're dismissing the idea that Cuban-Americans in Miami might hate Fidel Castro on their own, without some mythical Sharpton-type figure stoking the fires. I understand many would like Internet message boards to just be free-for-alls where they can post uninformed takes without anyone disagreeing. But that's just not the case.

There is hope. I know you can post without sounding dumb or pompous. You had a great streak going here from about early summer 2009 to early spring 2011. Just repeat whatever you were doing then.

If I thought for one minute that your distaste for that opinion had any more than a fleeting connection with that opinion, we wouldn't have a debate.
