Johnson will be a great addition -- he has a talent for turning technical detail into an engaging story. But Marley's new beat as democracy reporter is an interesting turn in the Post's journalistic strategy, IMO. And his focus on the upper Midwest with its political swing states likely will make it a productive beat.

Marley's loss to the Journal Sentinel is notable. Johnson produced big stories, but he wasn't in the day-to-day mix much -- and the paper still has other science/health reporters. Marley's former beat is bread and butter for the paper.
