I played men’s softball tonight for the first time in 13 years. It’s just about the first time in more than a decade I’ve scratched my competitive itch on a field rather than in the newsroom or at a card table. Holy hell, what a good time it was. Went 2-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI, 2 R, to go along with a putout and an assist on defense.

It got me thinking that most of us got into sportswriting because we love competition at some level. So how do you all scratch that itch?

This Saturday, I’ll play in my annual 1970s Little League alumni game. This is at least our 10th year and most of us are in or near our 60s.

We go 9 innings and play hardball with wood bats on our old field. We do use some teenaged sons to catch and give us a breather in the field, but we don’t let them pitch. We even have a few guys who went to Williamsport in 1975.

There are always some muscle pulls and soreness, but fortunately, there has only been one major injury all these years.

It’s about all I do competitively, but it’s a blast.

It was soccer up until about 35, then I switch to running road races for about 10 years.
Now, I just stick to what I've done since I was old enough to hold my first Zebco.
If you don't think fishing is competitive, you've never fished.

Baseball til 40/ softball til 50.
Thinking of going back to a softball 60 league
    basketball til 40.

now own 3 bikes. Mountain hybrid road and mix up the 3 rides for an hour daily. With strava app you compete on routes/segments

Road biking and golf. And competitive darts if you consider that a sport.

I always assumed I'd continue to bowl competitively, but the evolution of expensive technology and lack of facilities anywhere near me ended that.

    I golf twice a week.

I also shuffleboard in the winter. Laugh if you want, but if you play it well, it's very much the same strategy as curling.

Basketball whenever I do pick up a ball.

Cardio, swim laps, biking even though that's a me vs. me thing.

I'm still competitive in any sport I play.

Played rugby until I was 34 or so. Around 40 started playing golf fairly seriously, playing in local amateurs and things like that.

I wish I'd got into playing fast pitch after university. There are decent men's leagues in most Canadian cities.

You don’t go fishing to catch fish. You go fishing to fish.

Mentioned in another thread, but I had finally found a good pick-up hoops spot M, W, F when coronavirus hit - womp womp. Since then though, I finally got full-time employment, so I wouldn't be able to make those games anyway. I've basically been lazy the last two months, as Delta has ravaged Texas and I had my wedding to attend, but before then I was playing really shitty pick-up hoops at a local park. Absolutely garbage games - A mix of older teenagers and adults, with pretty much zero interest and passing from players in half the games, and no proper 3-point line. At least it was covered...

When I was still in Rhode Island, I played in the Brown intramural summer softball league - my now-wife's department, since she had no interest in playing, but they needed bodies, haha. I also played in the Providence Kickball League for about 10 years. That was fun, because it was sponsored by the Revival Beer Company, and you got a case of beer for each game. Less fun was WAKA, which was basically the super competitive gym and crossfit fucks attempting to play kickball. I say "attempting" because there would be at least one far-too-intense argument per game. Did it for two seasons, and then tapped out.

Still play full court hoops every Sunday night into my late 50s. My doctors and wife tell me to stop (arthritic knees) but I love the teamwork and flow of game too much, hard to find those anywhere else. I also love golf and tee it up about once a week or so. Gave up softball about 10 yrs ago.

My weekly workouts are swimming twice a week. Don't love swimming, just a good exercise, especially during COVID.

I was into Muay Thai at a Martial Arts place for about six months before COVID hit. It was a good mix of people and a great workout.

I did a weekly spin class at the local gym for about two years before Covid and cancelled my
Membership since then. Will likely pick up again once it gets too cold to run outdoors.

My current thing is running, as I try to get out 2-3 times per week. The local running store conducts a speed clinic at the HS track on Thursdays, which has been fun
