More cuts at the Plain Dealer

And the guy leading the charge used to be one of their prep reporters. Good writer, too. I couldn't look at myself in the morning or any other time if I were him.

    Gannett announces furloughs

Yes to all of the above. I actually feel more on top of things than I have in quite a while. At my weekly, we've basically entered summer mode, which is 4-5 stories a week between trend stories and features on local athletes. And every single reporter at my place, at least in sports, makes well...

    Gannett, Gatehouse talking merger

I'm shocked SaxoTech is still alive. I used that when I was the web editor in Newark (Ohio) in 2007. I think it was still around in my second stint there a few years later but haven't thought about it in years.

    Tribune buyouts announced today

Our printing press here in Columbus will close as of March 6, affecting 188 people. How many of them get new jobs within the company is anyone's guess. My gut instinct is buyouts and layoffs are coming, probably within the next month or two.

    Sports Editor - Decatur, Ind.

Never worked there but am familiar with the region. Nice little town, not far up the road from another opening being advertised at the moment in Portland. Definitely a slow pace of life and can't imagine this pays all that well. Nearest major (or mid-major) city is Fort Wayne, 20 or so miles up...

    Columbus Dispatch sold

Hearing from multiple people I know and trust that Columbus' sports deadline will be 6 p.m. Wondering if Cincinnati will be the same. People in Columbus aren't used to that kind of early deadline. Reaction will not be pretty from readers.

    Gannett, Gatehouse talking merger

Hearing from some friends in the business that as part of the Gatehouse-Gannett merger, some of the Ohio papers currently owned by Gannett might be sold to a group that owns some smaller papers throughout southern and southeast Ohio. Guessing that would be to quell any anti-trust concerns.

    Gannett, Gatehouse talking merger

:D At one time, the Dispatch did have two Jackets writers in Aaron Portzline and Tom Reed, but both of them went to the Athletic not far apart a few years ago. Now, the only true Jackets writer is Brian Hedger, who previously wrote for the Jackets website. They do pull backup guys in from other...

    Gannett, Gatehouse talking merger

So is this not going to happen after all then? Seems like the companies are still optimistic but guess we have a ways to go.

New York Post also with a shorter story on this ... https://nypost.com/2019/07/18/gatehouse-media-poised-to-buy-gannett/

    Gannett, Gatehouse talking merger

Take this for what it's worth, but one online news source in Zanesville, Ohio is reporting that Gatehouse is closing in on a deal to buy at least the Zanesville Times Recorder. A longtime friend and former co-worker in that same chain of Ohio newspapers operated by Gannett sent the post my way...

    Gannett, Gatehouse talking merger

We lost a news editor today at my weekly chain in Columbus. Only layoff as far as I am aware.

    Gannett, Gatehouse talking merger

Not sure how I feel about this, having worked for Gannett for most of the first 12 years of my newspaper career and GateHouse since they bought our local major daily and weekly chain in 2015. Here in Ohio, it would mean the vast majority of central Ohio (plus Zanesville, Chillicothe and...

Pissing match: Post-Dispatch vs. The Athletic

I don't see much wrong with this, but I personally wouldn't have named any other site in the tweet. I work in central Ohio and there's a grassroots basketball site whose founder constantly promotes himself with this kind of thing. Very much a chest-beater. That said, he never directly bashes any...

Sports Editor - Bowling Green, Ohio

I made more than that at a Gannett daily in central Ohio ... 12 years ago. That's awful. Can't see them landing a real good candidate, but I bet they're thrilled not to be paying what Jack Carle must have been earning after so many years there (not that it was a bundle, I'm guessing, but...
