What are your New Year's eve plans?

Putting the kids to sleep, making sure the suitcases are packed for the nearly 11-hour flight to Colorado and then some wine with my wife and, if we're not both exhausted, some fireworks.

    Collaborative Journalism Online?

Hej, y'all: I read a lot, post seldom but soak up everything everyone else flags, discusses and more. To that end, I wanted to see if you would check out The Climate Pool (it's at http://www.facebook.com/theclimatepool). It's a collaborative effort by a dozen international news agencies from...

SJ.com Secret Santa 2009 (Pairings made, PMs sent)

My gifter last year rocked the house with a great Brewers fleece. I wear it everywhere it is cold (which in Europe, is a lot). I still taste the Boo Berry that my SS from 2007 hooked me up with. Man that was tasty!

    Graphic Novel/Comic Book Thread

I just read Neil Gaiman's Marvel Universe treatment of "1602." Interesting concept and the story telling was, as is to be expected, top notch. The art was splendid. I'm going to read Darwyn Cooke's adaptation of "The Hunter" this week. I'm really looking forward to that one.

    Things I like

Comic books (more specifically DC's "Wednesday Comics" a 12-week-run of a few stories done on newsprint, oversized along with anything done by Darwyn Cooke) Discovering new but old post-punk pop like Cannonball Jane, Rocketship and Talulah Gosh Listening to American Forces Radio on 873 AM in...

RIP Crystal Reid Austin (Bismarck Tribune)

Crystal was a fine person and a solid reporter. I knew her for a couple of months last summer when she was on a fellowship in Germany. I was astounded when her colleague at the paper in Bismarck e-mailed me.

A solution for recording phone calls

I use that product and I've been quite happy with its results. It's easy to use, non-obtrusive and the audio quality is good. You can get details on it here: http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-TP-7-Telephone-Recording-Device/dp/B000GU88CQ/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1248175330&sr=8-7...

Post a Song you are listening to now...

"Bad Things" - Jace Everett. (Heard it on True Blood and was hooked. Guy's two albums that I found are pretty good).

    Last movie you watched......

I bought a DVD of Danny Boyle's "Sunshine" and was pleasantly surprised by the film (it got some horrific reviews, but it was only a euro at the local video shop).

Shooter kills 12 in South Alabama

As in the Geneva County shootings (I lived in Hartford for a spell back in the early 1990s when I worked for the Eagle), AP just reported that the German shooter apparently killed himself during a shootout with police.

    What if....?

I majored in journalism and I'm glad I did but with hindsight I think I would have gone on to medical school. I took the MCAT and applied to a couple of med schools and was pleasantly surprised to receive acceptance letters. I couldn't afford the tuition but now, looking back, I should have...
