    Sports Writer- Harrisonburg, VA

This one was filled recently. Nick Sunderland previously of the Wisconsin State Journal takes over. From his twitter: https://twitter.com/NSunderland4/status/425368962235240448 https://twitter.com/NSunderland4/status/425369187276439552

    The Soccer Thread (Version 7.0)

I imagine I'll end up buying it once the free preview of Direct Kick on TV runs out. $50 is a great deal compared to other similar packages.

Which new TV shows are you excited to watch, 2012-13 edition...

I saw it mentioned briefly earlier, but what are thoughts on Netflix's new original series "House of Cards" which premiered on Friday? And also what do people think about the model of dropping all 13 episodes of the season at once? Personally I'm really enjoying it so far. Burned through three...

Cowboys Stadium ain't in Dallas ...

Correct. Started in downtown PHX, but moved out to suburb of Glendale.

    Underrated sports writers

As as Arizonan, I really respect the work that Doug Haller does covering both the ASU football and men's basketball beats for the Republic. He produces a ton of stories and blogs frequently for those interested in smaller details. He also does a good job of mixing in features with his beat...

    AZ Republic going behind paywall

As someone who grew up in Phoenix, has the Republic's Dbacks champions cover hanging on my wall, checks AZcentral daily, this is very sad news. My parents still get the paper and probably still will, but living out of state I'm sure this will change my consumption of the writers and teams I...

    Funniest Comedian

I agree on Louis CK and Aziz being at or near the top of the list right now. Obviously very different styles, but those two I can listen to over and over. And of course, when he is working, Chapelle is unmatched. His "Killing Them Softly" has gotten me through many long car rides. Most...

"I" and "Me" in column writing

Completely agree. I have read plenty of beautiful pieces that include the first person. I do always make sure to go back and read each instance I use "I" or "Me" in a profile and see if I can make that sentence or sentiment stronger by rewording.

    UEFA Euro 2012

I'm glad there is a post and hopefully plenty of talk on this. I haven't had proper time to research some of the mid to lower tier teams, but on the first day I'm taking Greece and Poland drawing and Russia winning by one.

    U. of Virginia football beat writer, Charlottesville Daily Progress

I haven't been around long enough to know the history of this opening, but I sent them my stuff and because of a few things in my life right now this would be a dream situation.

Paper writes story of star high school player's failure to graduate

Before reading it I was thinking that the only way it was close to newsworthy was if it affected his status with playing football in the future. After reading it, that feels a little more tricky. Clearly grades have been a recurring story in his football career and many readers might even know...

    Dueling James Harden pieces

I know that others usually do something like this, but I saw one of these pieces today and wanted to hear what folks had to say. Grantland dropped a lengthy Harden piece today just a few days after the NYT had one of its own. Grantland...

    Chris Jones: "Being Poor Sucks"

I have to say I agree about the ridiculousness of fetishising our poverty. Sure, I love the romanticism of writing and its craft and it's funny to joke about being broke and living cheap; but coming from a 22-year-old who graduated college a couple weeks ago and is essentially on salary with his...

Baseball beat, Charlotte Sun (Port Charlotte, FL)

Looks like an awesome opportunity. I absolutely love minor league baseball, just something so fun and usually quirky. Sent in my materials for sure, hope I can be one of the "talented newcomers" still considered. Applying to jobs at least makes graduation and unemployment feel more fun.

    Feedback on basketball feature

Thank you very much for the read, it means a lot and was quite helpful. Because of the nature of my school and our newspaper, my stories are essentially never edited from a content standpoint. It really makes a difference to have somewhere that I can get feedback not just on my spelling, but...
