When is a parody column not a parody column?

    Ah, who cares? It's hockey.

    Problems at Patch.com

Once again, it is not about "finding something". It's about reinventing yourself. It's about going back to school and pursuing a new career. After being laid off, I, for example, coached high school football and baseball as a volunteer assistant while applying for teacher credentialing...

    Problems at Patch.com

That's because being forced out of journalism was the best thing that happened to so many of us, and our hearts go out to all the people who are still toiling in journalism, and dealing with the mind-boggling nonsense that comes with it, while believing that what they do still matters. Sure...

    What's this op-ed missing?

The Wall Street Journal is race-baiting its overwhelmingly upper class white readership, and it exploited a teenager to do so. What's the discussion here?

F$#% you, Sporting News: Layoff names according to Big Lead

I am definitely not bummed out for these people. In fact, I'm happy for them. Sure, it sucks to lose their jobs right now, but in the long run, they will be happier in their new endeavors. One of the greatest things that has ever happened to me is journalism kicking me out the door, and that's...

ESPN's Sam Alipour on Miguel Cabrera

Yet, Sam Alipour is at the top of his profession. This article reminds me of why I'm so happy not to be working in journalism anymore. Doesn't matter if you are covering high school, college, or pro sports. You are always the outsider.

Average journalism major starting salary is...

Yeah, because their minority status was the reason 90% of the people working in an industry that's 90% white male (and rising) got their jobs. Minorities have more obstacle against us, not less. You are blind if you can't see that.

Getting out ... just to get out

That is absolutely false. There was nothing in sports journalism that I experienced (and I have helped cover the championships of all three major sports) that came close to the highs (or even "mid-levels") of my current job of high school teacher, which comes when you make a genuine difference...

Average journalism major starting salary is...

I started out in the NY/NJ metro area, and a teach and coach in the suburbs now. When I was in college, I had internships with several major metro papers. I was also part of a minority journalist organization and met a lot of recruiters (back when that position still existed) at various...

Average journalism major starting salary is...

It is funny that you are laughing at me for saying that someone who completes a 4-year college degree should expect to earn more than a very modest amount of money. I started out making $47,000 to cover high school sports and help out with the "big sports", while many of my friends were...

Getting out ... just to get out

I am far happier away from journalism, and I don't know any ex-sports journalist who isn't also happier post-sports journalism. I was laid off in early 2009, but got a modest severance package (about 4 months pay). During that time, I enrolled into a teacher credentialing program, and took care...

Average journalism major starting salary is...

I never went to journalism school, but I did start out as a sports writer at a newspaper at more than $40,900. They're saying $40,900 is an AVERAGE. That's not a high number at all. I would sure hope that anyone who earned any 4-year college degree is making more than $40,900.

I should expect to get paid...

Shut your fat trap up and get off your high horse. Some newbie comes here looking for genuine advice, gets a snarky response, asks if it is serious, and then has to deal your sorry punk ass? Get out of here, bro.

Who's the whitest team in the NBA? (no, it's not the Celtics)

Agreed. Mark, you are a piece of garbage. I bet you're one of those loser sports journalists who likes to complain that you lost out on an opportunity because you're a white male, even though your industry is about 90% white men. That fact that you can't distinguish between "complement" and...
