Is Victoria like the other Texas coastal cities ... one huge refinery after the other?

    Sports editor, Hutchinson (KS) News

Sangimino is a great guy. Not the greatest golfer, but I believe in the Bear Bryant philosophy on golf. To quote the Bear, "Show me a coach who's a good golfer and I'll show you a coach who ain't worth a shirt." So Pat must be a helluva sports editor ; )

Sports terms that have fallen out of favor in the last 60 years

Tickled the twine charity stripe netted paydirt ducats signal-caller quintet scooted a shot from downtown roundballers gridders bucket round-tripper Red Sox Skipper Yep, used 'em all and I just might break out my leisure (sp?) suit and use 'em again.

A slight follow to this story. Both the Longview paper and the Marshall paper announced their sale last week to Westward Communications.

Edict: pay your own way in to games

That may be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. Why not just get food from the concession stand and just expense everything? That way you are not getting anything. And make sure the copies of the stats they give you are also paid for at .25 per sheet. And ask what your portion of the...

    Youth sports

Could you run the entire submission on the web with a tagline on the print version that says something to the effect that more information on this game can be found on your web site? We do this a lot when we have to chop stories. That way the story is there in its entirety and the parents could...

Best Press Box Food For College Football In the Nation?

You want to do a story on food at athletic events, then do one on small town prep basketball tournament hospitality fare. The folks at these tournaments go to great lengths and at their own expense to provide food for the tournament workers and media. The food at these tournaments is usually off...

    Texarkana, TX -- Sports Writer

They also do some occasional Arkansas coverage, when the team plays in Little Rock primarily. With Texarkana natives Ryan Mallett and Cobi Hamilton both at Arkansas, that coverage might increase. They don't often make the drive up to Fayetteville, but that might change this year. Not sure if...

Hyper-local folks: How'd you get through summer sports coverage?

We tried something a little different this year. We contacted every local golf course and asked them "what is your signature event?" Then we assigned them to a different staffer. So we covered about 15 golf tournaments on top of the minor league baseball, youth league baseball, etc. Every week...

    So how's your tab coming?

Our deadline is tomorrow and again our ad staff appears to have topped their sales goal for the fifth straight year since I've been here with more than 2,000 inches. We do a broadsheet 4-section run. Generally it's 48 pages (12-12-12-12). We slightly tweaked our format this year because of fewer...

Keeping score on iPhone -- football season coming

Try iscore. They have an awesome baseball scoring app that not only scores the game, but feeds a web site where fans can get constant real time updates. I was told they have a scoring program for damn near every sport, including badminton. Who knew?

    Sharing copy between sister papers

We use an FTP site and share content with not only our sister papers, but also other smaller dailies that pay a small fee to use our content. We also e-mail out the content and a sports budget for the week. I try and send out a note to the subscribers when the budget changes or a new story pops...

SEC plans "new media" policy similar to NFL ... lawsuits a-comin'!

It doesn't say anything about still photos ----- yet. Only video. If they do this on still photos, we'd have a hard time justifying sending a photog to games. We'd go with just AP game art, then shoot practice art for midweek features in the 20 minutes per day we're allocated for practice.

Getting co-workers at a twice-weekly to get into daily mindset

You and the ME have to mandate it, make it part of their reporting duties and hold their feet to the fire. We've made it part of the evaluation process here. Breaking news and live sporting events should be a daily part of any newspaper's web site regardless of if it's a daily, weekly or twice...
