    High school football press boxes

My two cents. I agree with what Ty said a couple of pages ago about picking your battles. As for me, I don't sweat the pressbox problems. I'm lucky in that locally, all the big schools have room and usually have spaces marked for the local media. There was one high school for a bigger...

    Michael Jackson ceremony coverage

I know what you're saying, and to me, all the Jackson coverage was overkill, but I guess that's what happens when some of his stature dies. But the editor in me as to point out .... Diana technically or otherwise was not a head of state.

Atlantic story: "The Newsweekly's Last Stand"

Back in the 1980s, I felt U.S. News and World Report kicked Time's and Newsweek's butts. It was big, all news and was packed with tidbits. I hated when is started going downhill. By the time it became a monthly, it was just a sad shadow of its former self.

    Does the home book rule?

It seems that these 14-year-old JV kids are getting a lot of grief. In my area, not too many kids do the book. It's often a parent or an assistant coach. And the couple of teams that do have a kid do the book, he/she is in the dugout and the coach will make the calls on the questionable hits/errors.

    Does the home book rule?

Oh, one more thing to add, which makes the official book not always official. I've known quite a few coaches who reviews the book after the game and makes changes/corrections. And this isn't done to pad stats. It's done because they knew the scorekeeper didn't always use the right judgement on...

    Does the home book rule?

I'm late to the party, but I'll give my two cents. On baseball, I'll go with my book and my stats because there's no time after the game to check everything with the home book when it's kept in the dugout. If someone is keeping the book in the pressbox, then we'll usually talk about the...

    Coach reaction

The coach might be a good guy, but that definitely was a douche-moment. I've covered a couple of girls programs with long win streaks like that -- not losing a district game in more than three years, not losing to a county team in even more years and not losing to anyone in a couple of years --...

    Lynn Hoppes to ESPN

Frank, you're always a voice of reason on this board, so I'm not being critical, just curious. What exactly could any APSE president have done? THere's not exactly a lot of power or any resources (money) in the position to do much of anything but try to be positive. And he was SE of a major...

    More furloughs from Gannett

I'm not one of those people whose knee-jerk reaction is to rip all corporate leaders and say they're all (fill in the blank with your most vile descriptions). I really would like to think that there are a lot of very competent people trying to do the best they can in a changing industry in bad...

    All-Area (or county, etc.) teams

I think we've run the line that said the teams are based on nominations from the coaches. But we've had two outs if we wanted to put a player on a team that the coach didn't nominate. First, coaches can nominate players on other teams. Second, we had a line — I forget how it was worded — where...

    All-Area (or county, etc.) teams

I agree. I always knew the top players on all the teams (22) in the county and the challenge was to figure who goes on first, who goes on second and who goes on HM. The coaches knew the top players on the teams they played but not the teams they didn't play. So I'd ask for nominations to see how...

One cost-cutting move I can get behind

Aren't there different levels of AP service where there is a cheap package where you get a lot of stories but not all the agate — something like that. If you're on one of the more expensive packages, can you just get one of the cheaper ones??

Herald to cut about 175 positions

"All management bonuses have been cut this year, too." I hope this means eliminated as opposed to reduced.

Dear AP (Re: State basketball tournaments)

In Florida, the FHSAA will update the playoff brackets pretty quick after the games, beginning around 9:30 and by 11 most of it is updated except a few stragglers. As for the state tournament, the site provides live scoring during the semis and finals for both boys and girls. AP will also have...

    Incredible story about Bobby Orr

Just finished reading it. It was a great story — great reporting and great writing.
