    Gary Smith to retire

A while back in this thread, someone mentioned that they wished Smith had done more beyond sports. If you haven't read The Little Girl In Grave 1565, you should check it out. It's Smith at his best, IMO. A haunting story. http://gangrey.com/?p=4

    RIP, Lynn DeBruin

This is terrible news. Watching Lynn compete day in and day out with Adam Schefter at the Post might have been one of the last great newspaper wars. One thing I admired about Lynn was that she never got consumed by the job the way many of us do. She always made time to get out and enjoy the...

    Ernest Hemingway

I'm with Boom in that I must not have the proper mindset or requisite brainpower to enjoy Hemingway. Since so many hold him in high esteem, I've always considered this some sort of personal deficiency. I'm willing to give it another try, though. Anyone have suggestions on where I should start?

    RIP Michael Hastings

Admittedly, I've always been a sucker for a good conspiracy theory. But this one smells. I wonder if it is some sort of automotive cyber attack. In 2011, researchers at the University of Washington and University of Cal-San Diego were able to remotely break into a car and manipulate the engine...

    Awkward dates

Third date with this girl, who is incredibly hot girl from the office everyone is after. I finally get into her apartment, and logically, think I'm going to score. We're in her bed. It was at this point she asks me what i think of unicorns. She apparently intends this as a serious question. She...

    An immature lede

There was a fairly terrible lede in the Boulder Daily Camera a few days ago about a Colorado football player who was in the Aurora theater the night of the massacre. Something to the effect of "Mike Smith has watched a lot of game film, but there's one film he has no desire to watch." Pretty...

NTSB recommends cutting DUI threshold to .05

All for it. The NTSB says it expects this measure would save 500-800 lives per year, out of the approximate 11,000 annual traffic deaths caused by drunk driving. Sorry if you can't enjoy that second or third drink with dinner, but the convenience of your buzzed driving isn't worth 800 lives...

The car question: Honda Accord? Nissan Altima? Or something else?

Having test-driven most of the sedans on the market, I can tell you that you're on the right track. If I was buying one right now, it'd be the Accord, and a close second to the new '14 Mazda6. Nissan's customer service, as OOP noted, would make the Altima fall back on my list.

    ESPN's new ombudsman: Robert Lipsyte

Lipsyte is a fantastic choice. I wish this move would have happened a long time ago.

    Chuck Culpepper on Frosty Westering

Outstanding. Wish there were more coaches like Frosty and more writers like Chuck.

    Adam Schefter's biggest accomplishment

Agree with what Mizzou said. Adam always treated me well enough. I can understand how he rubbed many people -- probably most people -- the wrong way. But he's gotten where he is because he out-works everyone. Can't dispute that. And way before social media existed, he also excelled at...

    Top sportswriting of 2012

Hruby on conspiracy theories deserves a top five.

Reporter canned over (lack of) byline

I'd have to say the fact a councilman refused to stand for the pledge of allegiance is the story. Whatever governmental mechanics that occurred once the meeting began are the notes. But what makes this newsworthy is the refusal beforehand. I don't think there's odd about "drumming up...

    New Springsteen single out tomorrow

Only going to the Friday night show in the Swamp, at least thus far, but definitely would stop by an SJ tailgate.

    Broncos & Rockies Sports Columnist

I realize Schwab is the one who left, but how does this affect David Ramsey? Isn't he the columnist? Does he now stay away from writing about Broncos and Rockies?
