Investigative report leads to bill; newspaper execs kill bill

The money line: The legislation had been introduced because of investigative reporting last year by the state’s two largest newspapers. It died because of newspaper executives’ lobbying. An investigative report by two North Carolina newspapers uncovered a massive labor scheme in which...

    What a stupid I am

So tonight I've got two deadline phoners to write and three pages to lay out. Obviously the think tank is cluttered. I'm making one of the phone calls, and I ask the young lady golfer, "Are you and your twin identical?" Only problem is, the twins are a boy and a girl. Oy vey. Back to work...

The Blanks (aka Ted's band from Scrubs) in concert

Because I know there are a lot of Scrubs fans on the board. I saw these guys last night at a local D3 college and they were outstanding. A very entertaining evening, and in addition to some of their original stuff - which was very good - they sang just about every song they ever sang during...

When the Podunk HS scoreboard/scorebook is wrong

Wrong number of team fouls, wrong score ... It happens occasionally. For some reason, probably just chance, I've seen it a lot more often this year than in years past. My question: During a game, if you see a clear error made that could potentially affect the outcome, do you say something? Or...

Covering HS football: from the press box or sidelines?

I'm guessing this has been covered here before, but the other HS football press boxes thread got me to thinking. I am always in the press box. In fact, it amazes me that guys - like 2 of my colleagues - do it from the sidelines. The game of football is won and lost at the line of scrimmage, and...

facebook - Should you 'friend' a person you cover?

My gut reaction is that you shouldn't, that it's crossing the safe boundaries of the reporter-subject relationship. OTOH, people (amazingly) spill out so much of their lives on the freaking interwebs these days, I could see it was a useful way to keep your ears to the 21st-century train tracks.
