    Kendrick Lamar = The Beatles?

The Billboard charts are a lot different in 2025 than they were in 1964. But K-Dot holds at this moment the Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 14, 28, 33, 56, 77, 80 and 81 positions on the Hot 100. Casey Kasem would roll his eyes.

    U.S. Semiquincentennial

Doesn't roll off the tongue like "Bicentennial" did in 1976. Any plans to celebrate on July 4, 2026? Orange Julius mentioned it in one of his first-term speeches in 2017 and crickets since

    English sucks!

I decided I should post this after trying earlier today to communicate with non-English speakers, namely a couple of Hispanic speakers and one South Asian speaker. North Texas right now is a positive stew of diversity and I welcome it. But English is forking hard when you think about it.

    Word of the Day 2024

In honor of Songbird's nomination of "chuffed" in late March 2024, I am starting this thread to honor the word of the day as a run-up to a possible "SJ Word/Phrase of the Year" at the bell end of 2024.

    Subject-verb agreement for non-binary people

I think I'm broaching a fraught topic, but what's the proper style for subject-verb agreement for those whose pronouns are "they/their/them"? The pronouns imply plural, but does that make the base noun plural too? Is it proper then to say "Demi Lovato are putting out a new album?" What's the style?

    Ripping Ass

I'm starting to get pissed off at the quality of jeans. The ass of my jeans keeps getting torn right on my dainty derriere outside of my left back pocket. I spent $27 to get them fixed last time (they're top of the line Wranglers not bought at Walmart so it's still cheaper to fix than buying new...

Holy cow, I need to lay off the SpoJo

I just realized I am posting way too much on this forum as a substitute for making my opinions known on the wider web, namely websites with the aliases of BookFace and Twatter. A lot of us have highly salient observations of the world as it exists today. Shouldn't I and others be sharing those...

Modern sports barriers: How low can you go?

I got stuck in to a rabbit hole that led me to Roger Bannister breaking the 4-minute mile. Which led me to a discussion on the first sub-2-hour marathon. Which made me think about records outside of athletics that we currently think are unbreakable. Who's the first 800-homer hitter? Who will...

    "Victory" vs. "Win"?

Where does the board stand on the use of these two terms that describe the accumulation of a sporting collective of more points than the opposing sporting collective? I'll start by stating the column headers in agate aren't "V D" for a reason. I had a deputy SE (who knows who he is) insist a...
