NYT reportedly sells off regional partners

Wow, and that attached email says the deadline is today. I honestly don't know what I would do in that situation, especially since I'm not one who would want to move away and out of the competition zone. But if the alternative to not signing is sacrificing your job? Ugh.

NYT reportedly sells off regional partners

Bump . . . Wondering if there is a follow-up to what Alan said about papers being evaluated again after the sale goes through. Has anyone else heard that? I haven't seen any info like that from friends who have been affected.

NYT reportedly sells off regional partners

I actually wouldn't be surprised if the gutting started at the top at some of the papers, especially in Florida. The CEO of Halifax is also the publisher in Daytona. If I'm a publisher at any of the Florida papers, I'm nervous.

NYT reportedly sells off regional partners

Know a lot of people at a lot of these papers. Everyone is pins and needles, and who knows what they mean when they say the plan is to retain "the vast majority of employees." I would imagine Halifax is taking on a lot of debt to pull this off, so they're going to be looking to cut expenses as...

NYT reportedly sells off regional partners

So HUGE was a little much. Still, gives them a lot of influence for coverage especially in the central part of the state, and desk consolidation would almost seem inevitable. And that's in addition to any consolidation that's already happened in Ocala/Gainesville.

NYT reportedly sells off regional partners

Anyone know anything about Halifax besides what papers it owns? This makes them a huge player in the Florida newspaper market at least, but I don't really know anything about their track record, ownership (public/private), etc.

Colleges Reporter, The Lakeland (Fla) Ledger

And I thought my inside sources were good . . . Mizzou, there is some UF coverage in this from what I understand. People in Florida can't seem to get enough Gators stuff, and Lakeland is a big Gators hotbed. Not sure how much travel there would be to FSU and Miami, but I'm pretty sure USF and...

I'm sure the position requires blogging and social media skills, right?

Able to walk away -- and the reason you did

Just got out three months ago. I'm in my late 20's and had a really good career going. I didn't have plans to move up to bigger papers, but I had built a great brand in our market and was moving up within the paper/company. But the lifestyle demands were wearing on my wife and me, and once we...

    Chicago Sun Times FAIL

Courtesy of Marc Topkin of the St. Pete Times: "It was big news in Chicago that the Cubs had worked a deal to acquire Matt Garza from the Rays. But the Chicago Sun-Times had a bigger surprise for its readers this morning with this back page photo - of former Ray Joaquin Benoit (who recently...

Another guy who thinks his site will be bigger than ESPN.com

iHigh has been around for at least 10 years, so it's not anything new. And it's never caught on the way Maxpreps has or even Gannett's highschoolsports.net. There's a new one out there called C2Cschools that some states are using, too. So yeah, uphill battle here.

Anybody know of any more papers with separate prep sites?

PDPreps is actually based off the site from Lakeland, Fla., which was a template for the NYT company: http://polkpreps.com/ The New York Times regional papers are going this direction.

Is anybody else finding it hard to tear away from the biz?

Took me almost two years, but I just landed a job in marketing at a university. Has nothing to do with sports. I was turned down for a technical writing job, a social media specialist job and a tourism marketing job in the past two years, so it's been a long road. I'm a little nervous about...

    What's next after journalism

Took me almost two years, but I just landed a job in marketing at a university. Has nothing to do with sports. I was turned down for a technical writing job, a social media specialist job and a tourism marketing job in the past two years, but I don't know that my background only being in...

That panicky feeling before a story publishes

When I write something that I know is going to strain relationships with people I cover, especially those with whom I have a good relationship, I get a little nervous. I think that's just natural. And there's also times editors will play a critical story (arrests, controversy, etc.) bigger than...

Is anybody else finding it hard to tear away from the biz?

So I wanted to revive this thread for mostly selfish reasons, as I now have an opportunity to leave the business after a couple of years of coming close in interviews with a few companies. The new job would be mostly a PR spot for a university, no sports involved, and comes complete with the...

Palm Beach Post seeks copy editor

I'm sure pay depends on experience, but I would guess they'd start at about $30,000-$35,000 and go up if you're an experienced stud.
