Keys to Becoming a Beat Reporter

If it's truly your goal to become a major beat reporter (D-I colleges or pros), I'd also recommend trying to get in on the ground level at a paper that has those beats. It seems like more and more papers are promoting from within to those positions. Obviously outside hiring still happens, but it...

    Journalism ... ethics?

Sounds like you and the staff put a lot of resources into an in-depth enterprise piece. When you have something like that, you run it when it's going to get the most eyeballs. If that's gameday, so be it. Also, there's nothing in this situation that even remotely deals with journalism ethics.

Investigative report leads to bill; newspaper execs kill bill

The money line: The legislation had been introduced because of investigative reporting last year by the state’s two largest newspapers. It died because of newspaper executives’ lobbying. An investigative report by two North Carolina newspapers uncovered a massive labor scheme in which...

    The NY Post Jared cover

I should not have said "or other publications," because that led you to focus too much on that part. How about just the Post? Has the Post ever made a rape joke in a cover headline before? The reason I ask is comparing a rape joke to masturbation jokes is not apt. The bottom line is it's easy...

Is there any way to avoid a preps gig as your first job?

I'm grateful, then, that I had a far more open-minded editor than you back in 2012. After 10+ years covering prep sports, I requested a move to news, despite having written exactly zero (non-sports) news stories in my career. In the 3+ years since on the politics/government beat, I've become a...

Media members angry about Steph Curry bringing his daughter to press conference

This thread is severely disappointing. Kudos to Alma.

What's the dumbest question you've ever asked?

I believe we've had threads like this before, and I believe I've shared this one before, but it merits repeating: During a phone interview, I asked a young man whether he and his twin sister were identical twins.

Political reporter laid off in time for Obama visit

Yup, a lot of pre-screening goes into covering POTUS. I've not tried to do it last-second, so I don't know whether it can be done.

Kill Your Idols: Eddie Murphy Delirious

You can't just do no curse show. Like you can't come out and say, "Mother forker, pussy, deck, shirt, and bench. Good night! Suck my deck! Good night!" Delirious is the funniest stand-up routine I've ever seen. Raw is a fairly close second.

Wis. reps vote to boot reporting center off university campus

I never said Soros was center. I judge a publication by its content, not its funding source. And CIJ's content is not left-wing. Nor is mine. Although I have been accused of bias by both sides. Sincerely, Erin Murphy, political reporter, Dubuque Telegraph Herald

Wis. reps vote to boot reporting center off university campus

When you're far to the right, the middle appears to be to the left. The Center is not left-wing. And if Charlie Sykes is indeed wrong, so is just about every person or entity I've heard weigh in on this, including Wisconsin Reporter.

So a coach tried to bar me from covering football (official new thread title)

Re: So I've been barred from covering football Please forgive me if I come off as a jerk toward you, king, because it's not my intent. But too many sports writers are hung up on getting a coach's quote. Who give a warm bucket of hamster vomit if the coach won't talk to you? You cover the game...
