    Horse Racing

I appreciate all the insight. I would love to incorporate a weekly story from the track at my shop. Our post time is 6:55 p.m. and they race in the evening and throughout the night so no early mornings.

    Horse Racing

Our shop is going to cover the Opening Day of horse racing at the local track and I drew the short straw on that. I've been to a few tracks as a gambler but never as a journalist. What are things that you, who cover horse racing routinely, look for on opening day for stories? Any insight would...

    Landmark follows Gannett's lead: Furloughs

Being a former Landmark employee myself, I am not surprised at all by this. I once was told by one of my former higher-ups, "Can't you cover these games over the phone?"

    High School Milestones

At my last stop, the coaches were good about letting me know about kind of milestone (points, steals, rebounds, etc.) I even had one mother come up to me at a basketball game and tell me she expected something in the paper about her son scoring his first points of his career. My response? By an...

Going from newspapers to talk radio

Wondering if any of you have done it and what your experience was like. I have a buddy of mine from college, who worked for me in the paper business and is now headed into the world of sports talk radio.

    Question for you

I am at a weekly shop where my main job is the sports editor. No problem there. However, we cover our county fair like ESPN has covered the Favre saga and everyone in the editorial side (four of us, including the editor) are expected to cover it. Now we were told to take lots of pictures. I came...

I have never been so embarrassed of fellow journalists

Last night at the NASCAR Craftsman Truck race at Kentucky Speedway, NE Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss made his debut as track owner. There were journalists in attendance requesting either pictures with or autographs from Moss on pit road. Are you friggin kidding me? What the heck happened to...

    PR people in NASCAR

About to go out and head over to the track to cover this weekend's race and I found this story to be interesting. In the year and a half that I've had dealings with NASCAR PR people I can say there are some nice people and some complete idiots out there. I am still waiting one year later for my...

    Mileage

So earlier in the week, we are told with the news that our company is upping the mileage pay. Then yesterday we get told during a meeting that our mileage will be cut per our publisher, who says, "can't we cover games and do this stuff over the phone?" Just wondering if this is becoming the trend?
