AJC to print Athens paper

Being a newspaper story about a newspaper, it buries the important news in literally the last line. If another company was cutting jobs, how would the Banner-Herald report it?

The change will directly affect four full-time employees and several part-time workers.

No mention of deadline changes, but it notes that delivery times won't change, so one can only assume.

The Athens paper has produced some outstanding writers over the years, particularly in the last decade or so. I haven't seen the paper in a couple years, but about a decade ago, I would have put this paper up against almost any other paper that size. That place did some tremendous things with the limited resources that come with being a 20K circ or so...

I haven't worked for the ABH since 2004 or so. It was a very good paper then, when we weren't putting "brass balls" in headlines at the direction of the SE. It's my hometown paper and I hate to see what it has become.

I recently left the Banner-Herald (or accepted a new job the same week I was the victim of a round of layoffs, but I got severance and a much better new gig so I'm not bitter) and I can honestly say there is a host of talented and dedicated journalists still there, both in sports and in news, that are being given nothing to work with by the publisher or owners. In the past three years, the sports staff has shrunk from six full-timers to four and the photo staff has shrunk from four full-timers to one.

The building that housed the ABH in downtown Athens has also recently been sold and will be renting out office space. Then comes the decision to stop printing. All of this has been spun brilliantly by the brass as "exciting, cost-saving measures that will allow us to do our jobs better."

The ABH was a paper I aimed to spend some significant time at after graduating from UGA. It was a better paper then, but not because there aren't people there that don't care.
